How many areas can the Stumpjumper be proficient in?
I have been thinking of buying a 2011 Specialized FSR Stumpjumper. I am curious how big of a hat this bike can wear, I ride a good 60%-70% of the time on xc type of trails. Other times I am riding dh type of terrain, or even one of my favorites cause it local, sandy ridge, I do like to ride the Monkey jump lines (both the smaller jump line and bigger). Even Black Rock once or twice a year.
I'm curious if it would be an unwise decision to stress the bke through that type of riding knowing its a little more mellow trail oriented. Would I be breaking parts often? Too much abuse do you think? Or should I just go rip and it will be fine :)
Thanks

You should read the bikes
You should read the bikes reviews on it (and other) bikes at MTBR.com. See what other riders are using the bike for and what part specs they have. You can get a good idea what is good and bad about it that way.
I have done lots of research
I have done lots of research and it seems like it straddles the line between what I want to do with it. I was asking as people here know the trails that I'm talking and might have a little more experience with full suspension bikes than I do. So in short I have done a few solid days of research. But still not satisfied. Any more help?
local bike shops...
It's also helpful to talk to local shop. If you aren't satisfied with responsiveness or service at one shop, then visit another...
When I buy a bike, I go to a bike shop. There's a premium with the cost of the bike, but then... I'm buying more than the bike. I am getting expert to answer my questions, and also deals on cost of service/parts as a loyal shop customer.
You could go with a cheap online retailer and order the bike that way.. but then you don't get that local shop support either.
also... going on group ride
also... going on group ride with a local club and chatting with people about bikes is also good way to learn more. and if none are posted for the area you want to ride, then you could consider hosting a group ride - there's not much to becoming a ride lead volunteer.
Ya the local LBS knows me by
Ya the local LBS knows me by now, I have been in there a few times riding it and other bikes and there help has been invaluable. I really like the stumpy, I might just change up the rims for something a little more durable and change the neck to a shorter 70mm one. Hopefully that will satisfymy downhill needs :)
Every time I ride that bike it puts a big smile on my face. Any other tips or bikes you guys could suggest?
Thanks,
Aaron
The thing with bike shops is
The thing with bike shops is they are going to try and sell you their brands and they say they are the best. The best thing is to demo the rig out on a trail that you know and have ridden before. That sold me when I bought mine. If you are spending $4500 or more then you have lots of options for great FS bikes.
Re: Specialized stumpjumper I
Re: Specialized stumpjumper
I recently purchased a 2011 Stumpjumper FSR Comp 29er after an unfortunate theft of my 2003 Titus Loco-Moto. I love my new bike...but I am an older XC type rider. Still, the bike seems to love to jump and the components seem sttrdy to date. It is a little tight in the switchbacks (wide bars and big bike) like you find early on riding the Historic Hiking trail (TSF) but it is smooth and fun and climbs well. Thumbs up from me!

Thanks Brian! If you have ridden more AM trails, how would it feel compared to the enduro comp?
get more than you need....
I've allways been a fan of getting a bit more bike than I need, therefore the bike (and me) never gets overwhelmed. You didn't mention doing any racing so why not go big? Enduro perhaps...don't overlook the remedy from trek (I've owned 3 since 08). Long travel 29er?? Talk about tough decisions! Always nice to pull the triger on the new bike.
Dcfulcan, you have a really
Dcfulcan, you have a really good point. I usually do get more than I need and I'm always thankful for it! I guess that's what I am trying to figure out, is how big of a hat the stumpy can wear. Maybe I should rise the enduro and take the lady out for a nice dinner :) lol
