More Coastal Range Trails

(new to group)

I live in Portland, but spend a lot of time out in Pacific City. I've searched all over, and can't really find any trails in the vicinity that allow mt. bikes. I've found some great areas to build some new trails (both XC and downhill), but am still trying to learn the process for doing so.

I've contacted the Suislaw Forest people, and they were very helpful in steering me towards getting permits, and information, but don't sound real excited about having a new trail system. They are worried about costs of maintenance.

I told him that we (my friends and I) would be willing to take on the maintenance (and building) if we could get use permission, but he still seemed pretty reluctant.

I have ordered all the information I could find from FHWA on building sustainable trails, trail construction and maintenance, and other training videos, but I'm not sure how to handle the political side of things.

Is it too late to get involved in the new trail system going in the Tillamook Forest? (for some experience)

Do you guys stretch down to Lincoln County? Or, do you know of a group that does?

Thanks for any/all info!

Coastal Trails

Hi!  This is Ryan with Westside Trail Federation. Good news buddy...

If you are interested in new trail development closer to the coast (Tillamook/Pacific City Area), there is an area designated by the Department of Forestry as "Mountain Bike Area 2".  This area is above the Trask River in the coast range outside of Tillamook.  ODF is cool with DH/AM/XC new trail development in this area, just need to contact them for details.  Ryan Kilgren knows the most about this area.  If I were you I would call the Tillamook district offices @ (503) 842-2545.

We (westside trail federation) will be developing a DH network closer the the hwy 6 summit, closer to PDX.  If you'd like to be involved, let us know.

You NEED to order IMBA's "Managing Mountain Biking" and "Trail Solutions" Books.  These will tell you all you need to know between getting organized, building, and maintaining trails.

I would personally attend as many local trail build days as you can to get a feel for how to sustainably build trail.  Every now and again IMBA's trail solutions training team will come through town and train people first hand how to get buy-in, manage, build, and maintain a trail network...

Hope that helps

Yes, please consider attending a work party

In addition to book learning, come out and join a work party to do real hands on learning.  We just so happen to be having one in the Tillamook State Forest tomorrow (Saturday September 12th).  I just posted the details to the website calendar.  It will be followed by a BBQ potluck and ride!  Come meet land managers, meet the volunteers that help create and maintain new mountain bike recreational opportunities for all trail users, learn about trails/trail projects, eat some food, and even ride your bike!  What could be better on a sunny early falltime day??

See you there!

trails lincoln city

I have inlaws that live down there. I ride this one hillside every once in awhile there that is a blast to ride. Mostly all fire roads but i bet some good xc/downhill trails could be incorporated there. Just would need to find out more on which forest comp owns the land now. they alow riders/horeses/.hikers/hunters  in there now so they are friendly. so maybe it could happen. this would be at the south end of town but im sure there are lot trails at the north end to ride on too.
