Upper Scappoose CLOSED

Hey guys, just got back from riding at Scappoose today.  The upper gate on the left of Rocky Point Rd. has a bunch of bright orange signs around it saying "Closed to Public Use - Pihl".  I guess that Pihl logging is going to be getting some timber out of there or something.  I'm sure you guys know more than me, but I'm a bit concerned that if this is true then there needs to be signage at the lower gate on the left too, for safety's sake.  I'd hate for there to be a conflict between loggers and recreators.

any updates?

Until we are shut down for good, it would be nice for those who ride Scappoose to post a quick note about the date they were there and confirmation that the first gate/N side is still open.

It saddens me that we've lost the Church of the Second Gate on the Left. I've re-watched this a couple times this week: http://vimeo.com/9060275

As of 2/27, Second gate on the left (and above) still closed

I went out on Saturday to see what was posted.

As of 2/27, the 2nd gate on the left on Rocky Point Road (aka the "upper gate" ) was still posted, as well as the gate directly across the streeet, and there are active harvest operations happening further up the road, at a gate on the right further up the road (before you get to Skyline).

We are attempting to work with Longview Timberlands (land manager for the land the Scappoose trails are on) to provide a more formal message, and will post that information when available.

Until then: If a gate is posted, DO NOT ENTER.

The Scappoose trails are on private land and this land is a working forest.   Please respect closures due to timber harvest, seasonal closures, or other closures as noted by Longview Timberlands.

Thanks,

Tom Slovak

Thanks

So, if the top gate on the left is closed, then technically shouldn't the first gate on the left as well?  Just for safety's sake and to avoid confrontations between us and "them".  Do they know that area can also be accessed from the first gate?

Just saying. I like that place and would like to see it last as long as possible.

3/16/2010 UPDATE: On-going timber harvest at Scappoose

As of 3/16/2010:

-Logging has continued on the North side, from up above near Skyline, eastward down to about the 2nd gate on the left as you travel westward (aka "top gate")

-The 2nd gate on the left is still marked as "Closed to Public Use"

-Indications are that the harvest will now continue on the South side of the road

-If a gate is posted "Closed to Public Use", DO NOT ENTER.

-If you unsure whether you may be entering the active area via a different gate, DO NOT ENTER.

***Thanks for abiding by these access restrictions so that the contractors can complete their operations and you can stay safe.***

In the meanwhile, snow levels are high this season, so there are many other trails that may suit your needs.

Thank you for your cooperation-

Tom
