Scappoose Update: All open as of 6/27
Met w/ Longview Timber at Scappoose on Sunday (6/27/2010) to discuss a few items... and as of 6/27, harvest operations have been completed at the top gate on the south side of Rocky Point Road.
There are still a ton of new signs at the upper gate, but the important part here is that there are not any signs that indicate that the area is closed due to logging operations or that the area is "Closed to Public Entry". So, riding is currently accessible from this gate...
This upper section got clear cut, and you probably won't recognize much of it. There are plans this summer to spray the cut area, which is a precursor to replanting this fall. Please be aware that these closures will be coming up, and the area will be posted during this time. Don't ride during these closures-- you won't want to be hit with an aerial burst of herbicide.
Important points:
- Always respect signage indicating that access via a gate is prohibited or closed to public entry-- this can change without notice, so heads up!
- Expect that the Scappoose will be closed at some point during the summer due to fire danger. Please don't enter during this time.
- PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK THE GATES-- As further clarification, please do not park on the north side of the road by the first blue gate as you come up Rocky Point Rd. Important!
- Be smart about where you park on Rocky Point Rd. RPR gets crowded and there are a lot of blind corners. Make sure you're parked far enough off the road.
- Tread lightly and pack out your trash. Longview Timber is looking to NWTA and all cyclists to do our part and provide good stewardship for the Scappy trails. Let's show them that we're committed to continued recreation on their land.
- Speak up. We have to help each other, as cyclists-- we're in this together, XC/single-speed/shuttlers. Let's help each other understand what we need to do to keep the trails we love open to all of us. Take the time to talk to someone if you see issues (littering/parking in front of gates/unauthorized entry). Let NWTA know if there are issues that we need to get back to Longview Timber.
There will be opportunities in the future to help out with Scappoose maintenance and cleanup, so stay tuned for updates.
Until then, thanks for listening and enjoy the riding at Scappoose!
