Siouxon Creek
As of Thursday April 17th snow was still blocking the road to Siouxon Creek at the Horse trailer parking corner at the upper trail head. It is now 'only' about a foot and half deep. It looks like this is the last snow blockage, since the road below that looked cleared - at least what I could see from above the blockage. My guess is that it could be passable in a probably over a week. The new snow expected this weekend probably won't last very long once temperatures warm back up to normal.
I've heard that Jerry Deruyter is doing some work on the upper part of the trail.
I rode my Alp d'Huez up to the blockage from the Mount St Helens NVM hq. Nice 22 mile ride! You can see my ride at: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/5424468.
And for those of you who might be in to geocaching I placed a cache along side the road too while I was at it!

Awesome
I can't wait to get a ride in at Siouxon Creek. Hopefully Jerry can fill us in on the trail conditions and projected opening date for this trail at the upcoming meeting.
Siouxon in great condition!
The hard work by Jerry DeRuyter, et al has paid off. It is in very good rideable condition. A traditional lunch stop below Chinook Falls is mostly under water and there's a cool breeze coming off the falls though.

upper Siouxon Trail, Nr 130
The upper portion of Siouxon Trail, Nr 130, which is accessible from Carson, WA - as opposed to the section typically ridden and accessible via Chelatchie - is in pretty bad condition with a lot of blow down about a mile below the trail head off Road 58. The trail on this section of trail drops pretty fast right off the bat, switch backs several times before straightening out, fording a small stream and then levelling out for awhile. There's a clear cut to the south of the trail which has allowed winter storms to blow over a large number of trees over the trail making it mostly unuseable at the moment. Jarred Blackman, Scott Fitzwalter and I went up there to do some trail work and we had our hands full! We did get low enough to see where Jerry DeRuyter had done some trailwork about two years ago which is unfortunately probably the last time anyone has touched this section of the trail. The portion of the trail more commonly used is in very good condition, thanks to Jerry, despite a 5 mile road ride past the slide which is still present on the normal access route out of Chelatchie.
Several more work parties this season are anticipated on the upper Siouxon. Stay tuned to this website. Work needed includes raking, lopping, drainage opening, as well as large tree removal.
A buffy portion of the upper Siouxon Trail, Nr 130.
A particularly bad spot for blow down. We made an attempt to clear some of the branches to make it easier to get through this section. Next visit calls for some chainsaw work here.
Siouxon now accessible
The slide that washed out Road 54 in last winter's flooding has now been repaired. Siouxon Creek basin trails are now easily accessible via Amboy and Chelatchie.
The photo below shows the slide that closed the road until just a few days ago.
Photo taken in February 2009 of the slide that washed out Road 54. the road has now been repaired and access to Siouxon Creek is back in business.
Upper Siouxon is open, GO RIDE IT
Three work parties later, upper Siouxon is open. It's not buff yet, but it's rideable and there are some sweet sections! Be careful, there are some tough sections that will get better with more riding, but get out there and ride that trail, help our trail work with your bike tread and feet (as you'll likely have to push a couple of times.) It's a great trail that could be a true classic if we just commit to keeping it in better shape

Access to Siouxon blocked for Road Repairs
Road 54, the access road out of Chelatchie, to Siouxon Creek trail system is closed for up to 32 days. The closure which began August 24, 2011 is to repair the slide between MPs 31 and 32.2. See the Gifford Pinchot National Forest website for updates.
It's definitely GOOD!
Just rode out and back on Siouxon. Started on the Upper and finished on the Upper, man that's a hard climb back up to the car. This ride is awesome when you add the Upper to the normal Siouxon trail. Get on it before the weather gets terrible. This trail is challenging, but GOOD!
