Join us this summer at Sunday Parkways! (6/21, 7/19, 8/16)
This summer, Northwest Trail Alliance will host a booth and provide a bike skill feature area at all three Sunday Parkway events.
Last year saw 15,000 people at Sunday Parkways so this is a fantastic opportunity to reach a ton of people, promote our organization, promote mountain biking and in general provide a safe, fun and challenging area for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
There are three dates this year:
June 21 North Portland, July 19 Northeast Portland, and August 16 Southeast Portland.
For an example of what we want to do, take a look at what SF Urban Riders has done here
We will have our first meeting on Wednesday April 15th, 8pm at the Radio Room on 1101 NE Alberta St.
Our first meeting will be centered around organizing and planning. If you have experience with building technical trail features, woodworking, or just want to have a good time and get involved, please join us.
Please send me an email if your interested and if you can make the first meeting (we want to make sure that we have a large enough venue.)

Great first build day
We had a great build day on Saturday, good turn out, great weather and solid progress. We made sure that our concepts actually work and are ready to start cranking out some features. Huge thanks to Craig, Tom, Scooter, Doper, Mike, and Csaba for all the help.
We will be doing another build day this Saturday the 16th from 9am to noon, at my place - 5226 ne 19th ave.
If anyone has a truck and can help me pick up more lumber this week in the evening please contact me - mail@willheiberg.com
Also, we are a little over a month away from the first Sunday Parkways (North Portland route is on June 21st). It starts a 9am and runs till 4pm. We need volunteers to help set up/break down and to be at the skills area to answer questions and sign up new members :D This will be tons of fun and fantastic exposure for the organization. Please help us out, any time you can contribute is a huge help, drop me an email mail@willheiberg.com
3rd Build Day
We had our 2nd build day weekend before last and are really getting alot done. We are burnign through the wood that has been donated, so if you have access to some extra 2x4s or deck screws and want to put them to a good cause, please let me know. (since NWTA is a non profit, you can write off any and all donations.)
Huge thanks to Csaba, Jim, Andrew, Tom and Craig. We almost all of the skinnies built, the tetters are done, half of the turns framed, and a couple of one off pieces finished.
Also huge props to Andrew for helping me bike a bunch of lumber back to my place in the pouring rain 2 weeks ago. amazing how much work and how little wood you can transport with 2 bikes :)
We will be doing a build day this saturday, the 30th at my place from 8am to noon. 5226 ne 19th ave.
If you have any questions, drop me an email mail@willheiberg.com
Another good build day!
Good turnout and a lot of construction completed. The kids skills area is going to be a lot of fun for the young riders at the Parkways events.
Great working with all of you.
There are still volunteers needed for the actual Parkways events-- it will be fun, so lend a hand if you have a couple hours to help kids have a blast on their bikes!

Great 3rd build day
We made a ton of progress on Saturday, huge thanks to Tom, Cage, Gabe, Csaba, and Doper. I also want to thank Kris and the Short Track Series for the donation of a bunch of lumber.
We should be able to wrap up the building this Saturday, so please join us from 9am to noon, at my place (5226 NE 19th Ave). Bring cordless drills if you have them.
As Tom said, we are looking for volunteers for the actual event. I need a few people to help me set up, man the event and break down. Even if you can only show up for an hour or two, it well be very much appreciatted. This is a great event and will be a ton of fun!

Come join us as we finish up the last of the skill features and see what it is we have been working on. These will not only be used for Sunday Parkways, but for the short track series, skills clinics we hope to offer soon and more.
Please let me know if you can come. Look forward to seeing you there!

Skill features wrapped up!
Huge thanks to Dennis, Cage, Doper and Craig, you guys rock. I was blown away at what was accomplished last night. We have a ton of modular sections now, it's like a thomas the trainset for big kids! We wrapped up the build by opening a few beers, enjoying some home made lasgna that my wife surprised us with and creating a bunch of fun technical lines to goof off on.
Doper quickly showed me how easy it was to ride the skinnies in front of my family and neighbors. Thanks, Doper....
We will have this stuff set up for Sunday Parkways, the Short Track Series, and also for the Tilly campout.
We are looking for volunteers, so please let me knwo if your available on Sunday the 21st to help out for a couple hours between 9am and 4pm.
Thanks to everyone who put time and sweat in helping get this stuff built!

The first Sunday Parkways
The first Sunday Parkways was a huge success. We had upwards of 30 kids swarming the structures at times and everyone form kids on push bikes to adults on road bikes had a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped build/staff/attend. We have a few ideas on how to make the next event even more fun.
Here are a few pics that Kris took - http://picasaweb.google.com/krisschamp/NWSOFSundayParkways?authkey=Gv1sR...
Be sure to check out the skills section at the short track series at PIR on Monday nights!
Bike Portland
Some very nice coverage on Bike Portland - http://bikeportland.org/2009/06/22/sunday-parkways-success-thousands-enj...
Would be fantastic to get the attention of Parks, ODOT, the city, etc....
Awesome bikeportland coverage and J Maus props!
Quote [Johnathon Maus]:
"North of Arbor Lodge is Kenton Park. All day I’d been hearing a buzz from people about the skills park that Northwest Trail Alliance (formerly known as PUMP) had set up so I had to check it out for myself. I was not disappointed. Skills park advocate Will Heiberg and his crew had set up a simple, fun course that consisted of narrow, balance-beam sections; a curvy track about 2-feet wide; and a few little teeter-totter ramps.
The kids were eating it up. Portland needs a permanent home for this type of thing. If we can have a network of skateparks, than surely we can find some space for bike skills parks. Sunday Parkways gave Heiberg a perfect lab to test his idea and it was a major success (please take note City Hall)."
Awesome!
It would be great to make sure CoP/Parks sees this at the next two events, and Will, keep the ball rolling and get us a couple of City pump tracks!

Skills Parks in our City
I sent the link to the article to one of our contacts at the Parks Bureau this morning, and will make sure others at Park hear about this and the huge interest it drew.
It was smiles all day. I estimate that a a couple hundred kids (and big kids too) took a run at it. The great thing was that it had appeal to a huge variety of skill levels. Kids that were no older than 5-6 were trying it and experienced riders were challenged too. I must have ran it at least 30 times.
See you at PIR tonight, and you can get your shot at it!
Tom Archer
That is awesome!
Great job everyone. Getting the kids involved is such a great thing.

The NE Sunday Parkways is coming up fast! We need volunteers to help set up, hang out and break down. The feedback we have gotten so far is over the top, everyone loves it and the kids mob it!

Janis requests more volunteers
Hello Sunday Parkways Friends!
We had a great time at the North and Northeast Portland Sunday Parkways. Thank you to all of our sponsors, donors, and volunteers for making the events magical for the 15,000 participants at the North event and the 20,000+ participants at the Northeast event.
Right now we are gearing up for the SE Sunday Parkways on August 16th, 9AM-4PM. We will have some of the same entertainment and food so if you didn’t get to try out an activity or taste all the food you will get another great chance. And we can ALWAYS have MORE VOLUNTEERS help us out before the event or on the day of the event. If you would like to volunteer (and still have plenty of time to enjoy the event) please go to: www.PortlandSundayParkways.org and click on VOLUNTEERS NEEDED, or call me at 503-823-5358. Volunteers from North and Northeast have shared fabulous stories from their experience.
We want to share highlights of the NE Sunday Parkways. Below are links to some of the news articles that we have seen. If you have more for us to read OR if would like to post your own stories and pictures please visit: www.PortlandSundayParkways.org.

“Dear Janis and the rest of the Parkways Staff & Volunteers, I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful day we had this Sunday. This program is one of the "coolest things" I have ever experienced. My two children 4 and 6 years old and my husband and I had a wonderful, neighborly afternoon biking in the city. We completed the entire loop, meeting and interacting with so many wonderful people. It really was a magical day.
I live on 47th Street. Not only did the kids get up early to decorate their bikes but they were the first to ride on the street sharply at 9 am and they kept going until we had to pull them inside to rest. My 4 year old was even caught riding with his eyes closed he was so desperately tired. I watched my daughter with special needs say to herself as she rode up one of the small hills, "I can do it...I can do it.." I was just delightful to be with the kids on the street without having to worry about the cars. I placed a sigh in front of our house "Free Plums Please pick."
Happily, our plum tree has been sufficiently picked. At one point there were approximately 50 people swarming the tree, searching for the perfect ripe plum.
So thank you for all of your hard work. Thank you to all of the volunteers. Thank you to the city and the sponsors. It was incredibly run event. Please come back down our street again. Please do as many of these as you possibly can.”
“’Please lend us your teenagers (for Sunday Parkways),” East Precinct Commander Michael Crebs asked those hushed parents. And I will return them to you better citizens.’ And he did”
If you would like to send me stories or photos please do so – we love them. Also, any feedback is also appreciated. We are already discussing Sunday Parkways 2010 – sponsorships and volunteer opportunities.
Sincerely,
Janis McDonald

Help out with the Skills Park at Sunday Parkways
hey Everyone, the final Sunday Parkways is upon us. The last one had
an estimated 20,000 people attend the event, and this one should be
even bigger. So far the bike skills area has been an amazing success.
We really need your help, even if it's for just a quick 2 hour block to
setup/breakdown/or man the skills area. Please see attachments for more
info on the event.
We will be setting up on Sunday, August 16th in Col Sumners park. The
time blocks are below. This is a fun way to spend a little time

kids have a blast on the skills track!
Set Up 8:30 to 9:00 am
Shift 1 9:00 to 11:00 am

can attend and help out and forward this on to anyone else who might be
able to pull a shift or two. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who
Thanks to everyone who helped build and staff the skills course for Sunday Parkways! This was an amazing success and we couldnt' have done it without everyone's help. Next year there are rumored to be 5 Sunday Parkways, what a testament to the success of this event!
Thanks Will Heiberg!
A major shout here to Will Heiberg, who came up with the idea of the skills park, put in a ton of hours to make it all happen, and then all summer long was the #1 champion, cheerleader and coordinator extraordinaire of the whole thing.
The skills park was one of the most visible and for many riders - especially kids - the most popular side activity at the Sunday Parkways events. NWTA got a ton of very positive PR out of it, it helped created a lot of awareness about who we are and what we're all about, and opened a lot of eyes and minds to the fun of off-road cycling.
Great job Will!
Whoop!
When are we digging the pump track???
:)
Awesome job Will and everyone!
