GIS volunteer resource?

Just curious if there's any NWTA members who are (or who know) someone that is knowledgeable in the area of GIS?

I'd like to see someone with a skillset who could help with trail map making (for projects) step forward...  Think NWTA could be a much better resource to local land managers if we had some professional volunteer types who could provide some expertise in helping provide data layers they could consume easily.   right now, there's a need for someone with GIS skillset to help with planning phase 2 and 3 of the single-track trail network at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park.

This is an area (GIS), that if I could... I'd focus much attention on right now...  One thing to do would be seeking a grant from ESRI (or similar company which provides GIS software) and obtain application bundle on behalf of NWTA...

GIS

Hey there,

It might be too late, but I'm a GIS guy.  I just graduated with a GIS degree and am currently talking with the City of Portland about an internship with Environmental Services.  Doing GIS work in regards to trails is very easy.  I don't have the software personally as its very expensive, but if I did I could produce many maps showing ideal slope, aspect, elevation, and so on.  Being a mtn biker I have done many GIS projects on ideal trail placement.  If you still need it, I'd be more than willing to help.

  I've gotten by with

I've gotten by with simple project maps for the Stub trail project - just using Google Earth.

However, in the future, it'd be good to provide more robust mapping capabilities and therefore would be good if NWTA had it's own licensed copy of GIS software.  There's couple of other resources who are also skilled at GIS.

Appreciate the offer, and I'll give heads up to Tom Slovak (trail care director) who is attempting to inventory the trails NWTA has maintenance contract for or is actively involved with planning and/or building.
