End-of-Build-Season Status for Stub mountain biking area
Since 2007, Westside Trail Federation volunteers have devoted about 650 hours to helping Oregon Parks & Recreation Department with development of designated mountain biking specific area (not yet open) at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park.
Yesterday, trail builder volunteers reached the milestone we've been working towards since beginning of year... connecting sweet new single-track trail to existing corridor to form a 1.5 mile mountain biking trail loop. This was "phase 1" for trail building. Park trail manager will be completing additional construction items later this summer (trailhead kiosk, drainage crossings, on-trail signage) and then hopefully area will be opened for riding.
Want to be among first to know when it's open? Sign-up for L.L. Stub Stewart State Park trail builder Newsletter at http://westsidetrailfederation.org (My Account > Subscribe to Newsletters) to receive behind-the-scenes volunteer news about progress and opportunities to help, or join the Cause on Facebook to "Help Build Mountain Bike Zone at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park (Oregon) ".
HUGE THANK YOU and positive trail karma to all volunteers who came to a build day event hosted at Stub this past year - if it wasn't for you, then this trail wouldn't be on the ground right now! OPRD is depending greatly on us to organize volunteer build days to complete construction of trails in the mountain biking area. There is much more left to do, but it's time to let the dirt rest for summer (its getting too dry to work - can't form it unless it's wet).
In meantime, W.T.F. volunteers are awaiting response to proposal submitted earlier this month for building "natural surface single-track with challenging features for one-way (downhill, duh!) mountain biking use". We are hopeful for some exciting news before start of next build season this Fall.
Here's current single-track trail loop as it currently lay on the ground and what the rough proposed technical skill trails plus extended XC trails look like:

While we've put down our tools and have picked up our bikes... As we ride this summer, our dreams will continue to be about building trails (with features) at Stub later this Fall (stay tuned)...

While trail building
While trail building is sort of wrapped up for the summer...
I'll be doing terrain scouting for potential "phase 2" XC trail routes. It'd be GREAT to have some other NW Trail Alliance volunteers join me (especially if you live on westside of Portland ... like in Beaverton or Hillsboro area) who are interested in taking an active role in developing the XC trail opportunities within Stub's mountain biking area...
I've submitted a proposal to NWTA board for review - to be submitted to Oregon Parks & Recreation - for entering into adopt-a-park agreement to take on development of the XC trails at Stub.
Want to get involved? Next steps for the XC trail is to do terrain scouting (dude, its the funnest part of trail building - seriously...)
Talk to me at tomorrow nights general meeting at Lucky Lab. Will be there early, but not sure about staying late...
