Trail Project updates

Tillamook State Forest - Downhill/Freeride trail network

Project leader: Ryan McLane

What is it?  System of new shuttleable mountain bike specific single-track trails located within Tillamook State Forest.   W.T.F. has been spearheading vision and planning since 2007, and would like to enter into long-term agreement to maintain this trail system as volunteer organization.   Options for beginner to advanced level riders.   Key proposed trail is over 4 miles in length, drops over 2,000 feet, technical terrain, adequate parking opportunities lower/mid/upper.   DH specific.

Status?  Deep in planning process.   Proposal APPROVED by Oregon Department of Forestry - Forest Grove / Tillamook district.  Taking proposal/initial trail plan thru review committees (ODF, TRAC , SFAC ) this Fall/Winter with aim to have project shovel ready by Spring 2010.

L.L. Stub Stewart State Park - freeride skill area

Project leader: Joe Rykowski

What is it?   Short variety of technical one-way mountain biking single-track trails located on a hill in mountain biking specific area of park.   700 feet of elevation drop over 3/4 mile.   Area for sessioning (nicknamed "Greenhorn" skill area).   Berms, jumps, drops, skinnies, teeters, etc.   building with Whistler Municipality and IMBA Trail Solutions single-track as guidelines.

Status?  W.T.F. volunteers have been assisting park trail manager with construction of single-track at Stub since 2008 and also prepared a Vision outlining idea for freeride skill trails.

Earlier this year, the proposal submitted by W.T.F. under new draft policy for engaging "proponent groups" as trail builders has been approved by Oregon Parks & Recreation staff for next steps.   Will be reviewing vision / initial trail plan with Washington County later this month.    Adopt-a-park agreement will be delivered to W.T.F. for review by end of September with aim to have project shovel ready by late Fall 2009.   W.T.F. volunteer trail managers will be responsible for building and maintenance of their trail.  Thanks to Stephanie Yao Long, Chris Long, Keith Shoenrock, Ryan McLane, and Jake Simmons for stepping up and taking on trail management roles.

Organization status

501(c)(3) application has been submitted to IRS.   Expect a response (letter of determination) that recognizes Westside Trail Federation as a tax-exempt non-profit.   currently, W.T.F. is an Oregon non-profit corporation based out of Hillsboro, Oregon.

Board has expanded by one position.   Directors voted to create a "Marketing / Communications" position.   Forrest Huntington has accepted nomination to fill this position.
