Sandy River DH trail on BLM land?

Does anybody know status of this new trail system?   Heard there was some DH trail to be had too.   Is it shuttlable?   Where's the trailhead?  When does it open?

Any volunteers with NWTA been involved who can give us the scoop?

Sandy Trails

I believe Momentum Bike Shop in Sandy has the scoop on these trails.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the info.

Spoke with Kerry with Momentum Bike Shop in Sandy.   They've got maps of local DH trails.

There's couple of DH trails near Sandy.   One trail built by Jason with IMBA is near Brigthwood.  "homestead".   Not shuttleable.  This one is close to complete.

The other one is being built by people from the shop.  It's near Mormot Dam and has some freeride/DH stuff.  IS SHUTTLABLE.   This one needs more work, and they're doing build days...

They organize weekly night rides and stuff...   They'll be doing a ride tomorrow night.

Ride Nov. 7

I am leading a ride out there on Saturday Nov. 7.

what a beautiful and PAVED

what a beautiful and PAVED road to drive up for the shuttle... yet its closed... could be fabulous DH trail yet its a failure because the gate is locked.

Done it once, will never do it again.

I wonder if the gate is

I wonder if the gate is closed due to a seasonal closure?  Will it re-open in the spring?

Gate is always closed

The gate will always be closed.  The road has access to the Bull Run watershed and is closed to limit access to this area.

Check the brochure here http://nw-trail.org/files/sd_ca_sandytrailbrochure.pdf for the layout of what the finished trail system will look like.  You can see the proximity to Bull Run on the map.  The rest of the trail system is going to be more cross country oriented since it follows the ridge line.

There are some potential options for some for downhill style trails was the build is complete on this phase.

Great trail

Headed to the trailwork day on this past Saturday and can vouch that the Hide & Seek trail (the first completed section) is super fun, a wonderfully-designed trail...  Rode it back down after doing trailwork on the start of the larger loop up top.

The creek crossing isn't really that bad right now, a few careful steps and you won't really get wet, but I could see in the spring w/ thawing snow that it could get a little more sketch.

Snow at the top on Saturday, a couple of inches, FYI.

Trail Boundaries

I was just up at the trail this weekend to investigate and let me also verify, the trail is awesome. It has some great natural and built-in flow to it. Yes the climb sucks but the DH is totally worth it.

As I got back to the gate at the bottom, I ran into a guy from the Water Department checking out the signage. He informed me that they have hired a new head security officer who has 25+ years with the Portland Police Bureau. His goal is to catch someone crossing into the Bull Run Watershed so they can "make an example of someone" The fine is $5,000.

Just a heads up to anyone who gets curious and wants to ride off the trail. I told him that as long as signs indicate the boundary, there shouldn't be a problem. He said that there are many old roads that will fork off of the new "Communication Breakdown" that don't have signs or fences. Please be aware and respect the boundaries so we don't lose access to this beautiful trail. Thanks.

  People from Westside

People from Westside Freeride (the ride club not Westside Trail Federation the non-profit trail build organization) have hit up Hide and Seek trail and give it two thumbs up!   It's got great flow and is well built.   Best suited for all-mountain bikes (5" range).   The ride up is a pleasant pedal up gradual climb - it's much easier than what we do when pushing up to top of Black Rock Mountain Bike Area near Falls City!

I still haven't gotten out and ridden this trail, but definitely plan to...  Above is just pass along from people I've talked to who are stoked on the new line in local area.

When is the NWTA shuttle day fundraiser going to be?  That's my only question...  $35 for all day pass, money goes to good cause...  100 rider limit... you'd get at least 10 runs in during the event.   Bam, $3,500 (minus event expenses) for trail builder tools!   That's what I'm thinkin' (and have already run the concept past the BLM land manager who would be willing to help us get a permit to do an event like that...)
