XC trail building at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park - starting next phase!
Hope to see you out there! right now there's 0 volunteers - and I'm happy to dig all alone - if I have to... but more gets done when there's at least one other person helping dig. Please RSVP if you plan to come!
There's only couple more build days scheduled in November! If you can't make it to this next weekend - November 8th - then there's one more later in month. Additional build days will be weather dependent (i.e. depending on number of people who RSVP).
Focus (for most all future build days) is on whole new section of trail starting from the south end of the park (up until now all the XC trail we've been building has been up in north part of park). It's all on the east side of the park in the mountain biking only area.
This next build day we'll be getting started on that south section and building from south to north where we'll eventually link into the north loop which is in place.
Think yesterday when out there putting the pin flags in place along the new section with John Joy... his eyes were opened to the fact there's LOTS of dirt singletrack in the main part of the park to be enjoyed too! We rode Widow Maker from Welcome Center to Hares Canyon and then down to Fellings Wedge... where we ditched the bikes in the woods and hiked/bush whacked for couple miles. Terrain scouting is the funnest part of trail building! found more than a few potential lines (kept things focused to the next phase though - we'll be building more or less along the lower to stay closer to creek).
It's exciting we'll be starting on this new section, and we'll be digging this trail for the next couple years to link in to the upper loop. then there's other possibilities - like building a rim trail or other opportunities.
All of this is separate from the project which is moving forward to build the freeride trails - which are an expansion to the north loop - that Westside Trail Federation is spearheading.

It goes without saying
It goes without saying though... The more people who come to help build the mountain biking trails, then the sooner it gets done and we can work on adding more lines to expand on the opportunities.
If you like to ride, and want more trails to ride west of Portland... Then nows the time to dig...
John Joy and I will be
John Joy and I will be at the Welcome Center at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park on Sunday at 9am.
Anyone else going to come and help us break ground on this new XC trail?
Note: The trail manager has asked us to consider naming the various mountain biking trails in the mountain biking only zone using Chinook jargon. I'm considering calling this trail "Skookum trail".
Skookum: big/strong,
Skookum: big/strong, powerful, awe-inspiring; monster
There were zero NWTA
There were zero NWTA volunteers (other than me) who came to work on trails. Was understandable though because it's now cyclocross season, and there was also the Sandy Ridge Trail System work party same weekend - how'd that go? - so it's all good...
Aaron McBride with Pedal Nation carpooled with me from Hillsboro.
MUCH thanks to Stephen Street with University of Portland who came with a car load of ROTC volunteers (non-riders). We knocked out about 1/4 mile of new singletrack trail with 7 volunteers - four who had never done trail work before but followed direction very well.
This was the first section of new trail starting from Fellings Wedge (south part of park) and we are working our way to connect with the north loop section. It'll take about 2 years (with all volunteer labor) to complete this phase.
Will have to figure outa time i can make it
