Banning motors from Waldo Lake

I recently met some folks from the Western Environmental Law Center who are interested in banning motorized boats from Waldo lake.  He said that support of some cyclists would be helpful.  If you are inclined to support this effort contact Pete Frost at 541-485-2471 x 109.

Here's and article on the topic:

Be slow to judge others

Is there a problem with boats on the lake?  If so, can the problem be addressed without banning their use?  I do not own a motorboat, but that is no reason for me to join a group of people wanting to ban their use on Waldo Lake.

Suggestion - Be slow to judge others.  Know the facts.  When needed, be open to compromise.  Most importantly be sensitive to the needs of others.

I seem to remember multiple examples of non-biking people who have recommended banning bikes from mountain trails.  Armed with ignorance and lacking a desire to know the facts, non-biking people has been quick to sign petitions to restrict or ban mtn bikes.  Lack of compassion for mountain bikers combined with a lack of knowledge has resulted in a constant attack on the mountain biking community.  To combat this, IMBA and NWTA are constantly working to educate and inform. The first step is to creating a solution that works for ALL users is be compassionate.

As a member of a group that has been discriminated against, we should know the value of being compassionate and the value of knowing the facts before we act.

Waldo Lake

Ted:
Waldo Lake has some of the purest water around.  Yes, there is a very compelling reason why motorized boats should be banned from using Waldo Lake.  They pollute.  So, if anyone can tell me how gas and oil residues and exhaust from the motors don't get churned in to the water by a motorized engine, let me know.

So, even though we have been discriminiated against in the past I personally don't think that should hold someone up from opposing the use of motorized boats at Waldo Lake.

Boats and Airplanes

I'm with Dave on this one. Waldo Lake does have some the cleanest water in Oregon and it is also the headswaters for the Willamette River which provide drinking water to many Oregon communities. Also as far as wilderness around the lake and mountain bikes go, there already is wilderness around the lake, they have a small right of way for bikes and camping areas around the edge.

I wouldn't want to see a plane to crash into the lake and spill it's fuel into the water.
