Powell Butte Project Advisory Committee Open House Monday 1.25.10
The last Open House for the PAC is to take place next Monday the 25th! This is our last chance to make our voices heard and be apart of the process. Currently the City is proposing to the close the Pioneer Orchard Trail in order to nearly double the size of the wildlife area. It is important that we also keep up efforts to push for multi-use trails on the Butte. From the last PAC meeting, I believe this is highly likely to happen.
Myself, Tom Archer and few other NWTA members and board members will be meeting with Emily Roth to talk about the details of the proposed trail modifications this week.
Hope to see you there!

There is strength in numbers...
Personally, I don’t ride Powell Butte, but I want to support the people who do and who are working to improve the trail access in Portland. Attending a meeting is a small commitment that most everyone can afford. It would be great if the mountain bike community showed up in numbers to ask for trail improvements and access.
Powell Butte is a great beginner area for people getting into the sport. By showing our support for the trails, this area can grow into something bigger and better.
I hope to see you there!

Powell Butte
I sent in my comments to the City on this a while ago, and asked someone at NTWA to clarify a while ago, and I guess this is the clarification! I had previously thought that these meetings and design ideas were positive for the MTB community, but now I read that the city is likely to close one of the two long trails in the Park. That would be a real loss. Depending on whether they opened up a new trail that goes back up the Butte from down there, we'd have no real loops around the Butte anymore.
I'm curious to know, now, why the original message (Powell Butte Project Advisory Committee: URGENT! Please fill out the Design Process Comment Form!!) didn't have a clear description of the three options, much less a recommendation as to which one would have the most positive impact on trail access. I bet that if people had known this was likely beforehand, instead of this late in the process, then we'd have gotten more comments to the City. I appreciate the organization's work on opening trails in Forest Park, but shouldn't NWTA also work to prevent closures in other parks?
Thanks,
Charley
PAC meeting, trails at powell
I would like to attend but i want to be able to make it to the group meeting the next night too. I have voiced my many concerns over and over again in here and have the same issues Charley witht he decesion process. JUst seems like they want bikes out of that area. I dont see what good to close some good trails that have been there for like +20 years. They have closed alot of other smaller trails and have wildlife areas big time. Need needed new maps to make beeter decesion, and more imput on the trails. Please Cecely, tell them to wait and get more input on the trails!!!!

Please respect the trails and the fact that we have built them in the homes of the wild creatures.
Hamster and Charlie. I do not ride very often at Powell Butte and thus could just write it off, but many people do. Not everyone is going to have time to be involved in advocacy. I say do what you can to help. If you care enough about Poweel Butte, get involved. NWTA is doing a ton of positive stuff. You can be involved. Just because you go to a meeting or fill out a questionaire does not mean you need to commit 100 hours of time to this or that cause. It would be great if you showed at the meeting in the time slot (5-7PM) and either let officials know that you want more riding options at Powell, not less, or just at least observed the "in person" process. If the majority of people who attend the meeting and fill out the questionaires are people with interests other than bike riding......well go figure what the officials are going to do. In a way, this is another chance to VOTE. I personally do not have time to gripe, instead I am going to take positive actions.
I hope you can follow your passion on an area you care a great deal about and NWTA can be the vehicle you take. Together we have more mojo! Whatever you do... keep riding and be respectful to all users out there.
