2010 Status and schedule of NWTA build days at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park
Last night, the adopt-a-park agreement was presented to NWTA board of directors by Parks & Recreation ranger and trail manager Steve Kruger. The 2010 agreement and associated project plan is being reviewed by board members currently with expectation that by early March a signed agreement will be returned to Oregon Parks & Recreation Department (OPRD).
Should be noted that this agreement is first of its kind under the new OPRD draft policy for engaging proponent organizations as trail construction partners. In the past, they have only entered into adopt-a-park agreements with proponent groups for trail maintenance activities. Understandably, it appeared that the NWTA board was excited to have this opportunity to enter into a level of collaboration with a land manager which showcased the mission to help build mountain biking trails.
John Joy and myself (Joe Rykowski) will remain as co-trail stewards for this project under 2010 agreement and will be reporting to Tom Slovak, the NWTA Trail Care Director for 2010.
For your reference, here is the build/maintenance plan for XC singletrack trails in the mountain biking specific area at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park -- http://docs.google.com/View?id=ddwmgm5x_21fqjgqqf8 (if you have feedback about the build/maintenance plan then please email direct to joer at nw-trail dot org).
The following have been selected as dates for volunteer trail build days and events out at Stub (to be lead by a NWTA trail steward volunteer):
Sun, March 7
Sat, March 27
Sat, April 3
Sun, April 18
Sun, May 2
Sat, May 29 thru Sun, May 30 - build/camp/ride at Stub (group ride)
Sat, June 5 - National Trails Day / State Parks Day
Sun, June 13
(Fall schedule will be released mid-summer)
Focus of the initial build days will be completing the upper loop so that by this summer, OPRD would be able to OPEN up the area to public! Once the upper loop was completed, then we'd refocus on the lower trail with expectation that by 2011 we'd be able to link the upper and lower XC trail section together for a nice 3 mile singletrack trail all mountain biking specific... tied into the existing 15 miles of share-use trails already in place within the park.
Looking forward to your volunteer support for this effort beginning in March!

Here's the project map
Here's the project map overview from the build/maintenance plan for the XC trails (you can read all about what's planned by visiting the link shared in post above). That green section from MtbZoneAccess pin point is the "upper loop" and the other "lower section" starts across Williams Creek bridge. We got a bit started on that trail last year (it's not ridable).
And for those paying close attention.. yes, there's a pin on the map for "freeride". That's to mark the area being planned out by Westside Trail Federation for a proposed skill area - several short trails (under 3/4 mile) from top of hill down into a small session area. Freeride features - berms, drops, jumps (mostly jumps). It's a separate project from these XC trails being constructed by volunteers organized by Northwest Trail Alliance trail stewards.

Rain or Shine! It's how we ride, it's how we build...
Reminder: Stub Build Day this weekend (Sunday)
Come help build these brand new trails for mountain bikes... this is a unique opportunity in a State Park to build bike-specific trails.
Thanks Joe and John for all your hard work out there, L.L. Stub Stewart State Park is going to be a great place to ride (and camp, too!).
The build day is this Sunday, March 7th.

3/27/2010 work party at Stub
Please RSVP if you are coming to help on Saturday, March 27th so group lead knows how many tools to check out from storage.
Event -- http://nw-trail.org/node/2022
There will be a prize drawing for volunteers attending this event (your choice of t-shirt, Republik jersey, Cane Creek bar ends, grips, or Follow Me premiere passes donated by Pedal Nation), and we've got Gatorade and energy bars donated from Cayuse Cycles. Please bring your own lunch.
A site will be available afterwards to volunteers who want to hang around after the work is done and kick back to talk bikes, building, and BS. (If Alex makes this event like the last one, he brews up some really great IPA and may be willing to share again...! Bring a cup or an empty gatorade bottle will do!)
If there are any volunteers who would like to camp overnight (Sat-Sun) let me know so I can coordinate with park manager to get your site fee waived.
As always, this is a rain
As always, this is a rain or shine event. We'll be building under the trees though and so get good coverage - so even if raining, light rain gear usually does the trick. However, all the build days ALWAYS have great weather! ...well, except for that one time it snowed, but we don't talk about that ;)
Don't forget yer work gloves, and bring a bike if you want to do a short pedal out to the project site then a bit of the singletrack we'll be working on. It's always best though to just come back out sometime when you can really enjoy all the trails. We usually have a wheelbarrow to take the tools out to site, so no problem if some of the group heads out after building to ride - can get your tools back to staging area.
Thanks to John Joy and Dan
Thanks to John Joy and Dan Rawlinson for taking lead during this trail work party. I'm sorry could not make it - would have much rather been out in the woods digging with you all instead of at a funeral but life happens I guess.
Looks like there was great turn out for this event. A dozen volunteers got the upper trail loop even closer to dialed. Still some rough sections we'll finish up next build day (4/3) and some additional features to add to enhance the flow of trail - so please consider coming out to help next build day!
Oh yeah! And
Oh yeah! And congrats to Jon Caulley who won the prize drawing day of work party! He scored 2 tickets to the premiere of Follow Me by Anthill (most of the same production crew that brought you The Collective, ROAM, and SEASONS).

Had a great
turn out last work party (thanks to John Joy and Dan Rawlinson for
leading as I had family stuff going on), so bulk of trail tread is
looking really good. Needs bit more work in certain sections to get it
dialed in plus there's some tweeking to do to add better flow/fun
(berms, some whoop-de-doo rollers, etc). Would be great to see another 6
- 10 people come out again for this weekends trail building fun.
There
will be more snacks/drinks available (thanks Cayuse
Cycles!) at the sign-in tailgate in Clayhill Horse Staging area
parking lot of Stub park at 8:30am. We'll be getting underway at 9am
with project overview/safety talk after 9:15 and heading to project area
by 9:30am.
We've got door prize drawing too - bring your favorite number in mind
cuz it'll be a guess the number to win drawing - your choice of Cane
Creek barends, Republik jersey, or lock-on grips. This is a thank you
to those who came to help on the build day, and your time also counts
towards end-of-season NWTA raffle (all volunteer work counts towards
"points" for raffle tickets for members). Join!

It's just a little rain... come out and play!

Thanks to all who have contributed in the past to build out of singletrack at Stub Stewart State Park in the mountain biking specific area of park. Every bit helps, and it's an all-volunteer project so we depend on you!
Not sure what focus
Not sure what focus will be. Prioritization happens with the park trail manager and sounds like there's work to be done on the north loop.
9am CHECK-IN will still be at the Welcome Center parking lot and then we will rollout from there when we get our marching orders.
June 13th - last build day of 2009/2010 season
Wrapped up the last build day of the season out at Stub Stewart State Park in the mountain biking zone today (north loop). Placed trail sign posts, worked on minor trail tweeking. Thanks to Bernie T and Shawn H (Fat Tire Farm) for the help!
OPRD has ordered trail signs, and will have those in place in couple weeks.
Inching towards taking the "Trail Closed" sign down and the "Danger" tape off the trailhead. 1.5 mile trail is all ridable - but can't open up until signage is in place (risk management thing).
Thanks to all 30+ people have have come out to help over the past series of trail work days hosted by NWTA!
Next steps are continued trail scouting on the south section to plan for 2010/2011 build season (starting this Fall).
OPRD has received funding for purchase of log stringer bridge design/construction. So by next year we should be on target for linking the north section with the south section (critical link will be placement of a log stringer bridge to cross over large drainage of Williams Creek). That'll tie things together on the mountain biking zone side of the park to include about 5 miles of singletrack. Note: there's more than 14 miles of shared use trails in the park already (over half of it natural dirt surface).
thanks to joe and others ...
Thanks to Joe and others that have been working on these trails!
