Hi There

Hey shredders,

My name is Michael Thomas.  I just moved to SE Portland about 4 weeks ago.  I moved from a small mountain town called Boone in North Carolina where I went to Appalachian State University for a BS in Geography with a GIS concentration.  While I was there I was 1/2 of the trail "crew" building DH trails at a local resort called Hawksnest, aka the Dirty Bird.  My roomate and I were able to fanagle our way in and start building legal downhill trails there for the first time and even put on the biggest downhill race in the Southeast, all while finishing up my senior year of college.  I decided to make the move out west while I could, it was the perfect opportunity and timing to do so since i had just finished college.  Now I'm talking with the Bonneville Power Administration about an internship and further work in the GIS field.

Ok enough introduction talk,  I just want to get out and shred and build trails!  I've been to most places around the portland area already.  I like the noodliness of Scappoose a lot.  Also I've been hitting up the Syncline trails often as they have a nice south-facing aspect and are typically dryer than most.  I've done a bit of digging at the Grotto dirt jumps with a guy named Brad, he seems to be the current trail boss there.  He's been busting ass lately and the new jumps are beautiful!

I hope I found the right forum for this.  Let's go ride!!!

Oh here is a little video of one of the trails we built..

  Howdy.  Welcome to

Howdy.  Welcome to Portland, glad to have ya!

Give a shout out to Shane Gould (shane at nw-trail.org) - if ya wanna help on the stuff out at Sandy Ridge.  It's not shuttlable but hey, sometimes ya gotta climb to earn your turns...

If you are interested in checking out some stuff west of Portland in the DH style which is shuttleable and legal (it's on ODF land and recently sanctioned)... check out the Raven's Ridge trail (it's not on maps or anything yet but its been approved and has local builders who stepped up to adopt)... It's near Reher's Camp past Timber, OR.

There's a freeride area proposed at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park (check http://westsidetrailfederation.org) - no ETA on dig dates yet.   I'm helping build trails at Stub in same network but for the XC crowd.  Just posted first build day of the season on the calendar.  (March 7)

Welcome to NWTA

Sounds like you are the type of person that is not afraid to to do some trail work.  Great!  There are multiple places that you can "plug in" to the group. Check out the calender for upcoming events.  When you do you will see that there are multiple worthy projects and trails to choose from.

My involvement in the group over the last couple years has been personally rewarding.  I have found NWTA full of tailented people working together to preserve, enhance, and expand our sport (and trails we ride).

Make sure that you sign up as a member at http://nw-trail.org/join.  When you do you get a dual membership in NWTA & IMBA for only $30.

I hope to meet you at an event in the near future.

Awesome

Sounds good guys.  I forgot to mention, I race downhill and dual slalom, but a huge part of my riding is XC, so I'm really looking forward to getting out to Sandy to check out some goods.  I'll have a look over the calendar and see you people soon!

Contact info

Hey Mike.  What's your email?  I'm up for riding almost all the time when I'm  not working.  I'm looking to get to Syncline this weekend as I just got my bike  fixed.  I probably don't catch as much air as you, but I love to ride!  Come  on out.  Also, Ted and I are  organizing a big ride in the Hood area this Sept, a long ways off, but put it on the calendar.  60+ miles of the best singletrack in the area.  Should  be a day to remember!

My email address is

My email address is mbthomas85@gmail.com   Feel free to contact me anytime to ride, I'm almost always available.  That ride in Hood River sounds awesome, gotta pack some extra food for that one!

WooHoo another one

Mike,  I'm quite familiar with the Boone area and I grew up in a much smaller town called New Castle, Va.  I came out here in 2000.  Feel free to drop me a line at nh4cl@yahoo.com for a ride.  You'll dig it here.  The beer is much better than Beast and Natty Lite.
