Hood River Trail Suggestions!

So after a lot of almosts and time spent on Craigslist I am finally going to throw the money down and buy an all mountain bike.

On Saturday I am renting a Niner in hood river ... I am looking for some suggestions on good trails in the area to test the bike out. My skill level is Newbie (advance newbie if such a thing exists) …  when back in Cali I hit the trails with the old crew and have spent a couple weekends at Ski Bowl).

I any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Also, if your out there and want to ride with that would be chill.

I rode Syncline across from Hood ZRiver and it was a blast..I am not sure where I am riding yet but would be up to meet and ride some day

Trails in the area

Hood River is great, and there are a lot of options for you. For beginner trails I would either hit some of the easier stuff in Post Canyon (seven streams) or go up into the Mt Hood forest. East Fork hood river trail is a tame out and back (4 miles each way) and it is right off of hwy 35 as you head up near the mountain.

There is Surveyor's Ridge which I just rode last Sunday and I was amazed the trail is perfect and maintenance had already been done on it. The north end of Surveyor's is easiest. I am not sure 8mile and KnebalSprings are ready yet. They might be as the snow appeared to be above 5000' only. I'd stay away from Syncline right now since it is loaded with ticks and poison oak.

Stop into Discovery bikes in HR and buy one of those maps they sell. Have a great ride!

Thank you for the input ...

Thank you for the input ... i tried to hit SURVEYORS RIDGE TRAIL but it had too much snow so i rode the trail right next to it ... i think it was called Dog River Trail. It was fun, pretty mellow going down but hard going up!

Thanks

...ride a mojo.

Rent an Ibis from John at Discovery bikes in HR and ride the same trail you rode the Niner on.

...and then rent a 5.Spot from Joshua at Cyclepath.

Actually, if you're not in a hurry, one of the best testing sessions is Mountain Bike Oregon. There's enough high quality demo action there that those seriously looking (enough to do all-day rentals so they can hit real trail) see the entry fee as a bargain.

I've been rockin' a new Niner for about 6 weeks now, built myself... I can give you some ideas of what to do and not should you decide to go the Niner route.  Just drop a line whenever you feel the need.

I am looking to get the Large RIP 9 with Fox F29 RL, Avid Juicy 3.5 brakes,  Truvativ Stylo 3.3 crank set, and Shimano XT (front), SRAM X7 (rear) derailleur.

I am 6'4" and 200 pounds. I have had a hell of a time finding a bike that fits my lankiness. I enjoyed my ride on the RIP 9, it felt good, a little small going up the hill but just right down the hill.

Love to hear your input. Thanks for all the advise and help, cant wait till I can cross paths on the trails!

I can absolutely give you a couple of pointers/options... based on what you've got above.
