Area Closure - Shellburg Falls Freeride Area
Anyone been to the Feeride Area @ Shellburg Falls? I was in the area this past weekend, hiking. I picked up a flier for the Shellburg Falls Recreation Area and there is a Free Ride Mountain Bike Area on the Map. The area is about 20 miles east of Salem. Anyone want to go check it out some time?
Thanks for any info,
Cage

It echoes what I've heard-- short runs, but fun. Some features large enough to warrant a walk-thru before hitting them, FYI.
Should be a good time. You should check it out, Cage, and let us know what you think.
Also, it's pretty isolated and lends itself well to making a camping trip out of it... in the campground or just dispersed in the area.

So we rode one side of the place which consisted dof 3 trails, we rode the Banzai Freeride trail which is prominent in this video. There is a DH trail called pusher which is somewhat overgrown but very rideable.
The banzai trail was short and can be shuttled, we hiked it since it was a .8 mile hike so wasnt too bad. The run has ride arounds for everything and none of the features are huge but some are decent sized.
The PUSHER DH trail was about a 1.5 mile hike back up and didnt really have man made features was more of a normal DH run with some tight somewhat steep switchbacks and fast open runs
I would say it took me about 1:15 to drive out there from SW PDX, we will be going back for sure to chceckout the otehr trails and to ride the ones we have found already...its a fun time and the place has tons of potential
Very fun area
Cage this is a very fun riding area on Oregon Department of Forestry land. I rode there a few years back when the first few trails were being constructed. We tacked it on to a ride we were doing at Silver Falls and had a great long day of riding.
Shellburg Falls closed during forestry operation
The following information regarding the current closure of the Shellburg Falls area has been passed along via our friends at the Oregon Department of Forestry. Please do not access trails that are under signed closures. Closed areas are closed for everyone's safety. I'll be sure to post back when I hear that the area is open again.

Shellburg Falls Recreation Area southeast of Salem has been closed to provide for public safety during a timber harvest in the area that began July 5. The popular visitor site two miles north of Lyons lies within the Santiam State Forest. The closure is expected to extend into the fall.
Active tree-felling operations have begun on the Shellburg Loop Timber Sale, immediately northeast of the campground at Shellburg Falls. Despite signing efforts by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) and the timber purchaser, recreationists have been entering the zone of active operation.
“Recently, separate groups of joggers and mountain bikers moved through the immediate area where large trees were being felled,” said ODF’s Russ Lane. “This is an unacceptable risk to public safety.”
ODF has closed the upper gate and put in place a closure that allows entry by permit only. The forester said the current timber operation and another sale nearby expected to get underway soon will likely remain active into the fall.
He said ODF may consider permit-entry for organized groups on a case-by-case basis.
“Again, we would have to have that high level of assurance that all users would be kept well clear of hazardous areas,” he said.
Recreationists seeking alternative sites to Shellburg Falls for their outings are encouraged to call the Department of Forestry’s Santiam Unit office in Lyons, 503-859-2151.

Sounds like great opportunity to organize a NWTA group ride event... It's closed to public currently, but we could get a permit to get in there on weekend and shuttle the Freeride area.
Joe sounds like a great
Joe sounds like a great idea, this trail is a hidden gem. it needs some work but its in very rideable condition so maybe a an event could help promote some mainetance work out there and us portlanders could have a great freeride spot closer then blackrock
So anyone know whats up with
So anyone know whats up with the freeride area? Is it open yet?
just called, still closed.
just called, still closed. The lady on the phone told me maybe a few more months, but it will be open all next season for sure. I hope the trail crew can get n wail it's closed and get some of the trails fixed and tweaked for next spring, I know that "Jump Road" was in bad shape back in June, and "Pusher DH" was a wee bit over grown, but then again, I'm sure they knew the trail would be closed most of the summer and fall and that maybe there isn't much sense in putting a lot work in to a trail that will only be open till July 5th....
