Stub Stewart State Park - "Stub Mountain Bike Area" - OPEN

updated post: 9/16/2010: "Stub Mountain Bike Area" had soft-opening to public access in August. There will be a comment period starting before end of September to get feedback.

Original post:

Single track is done and ridable, but until signage is in place and the beginner path that threads thru middle is graded... the park ranger has these tasks on To Do... then zone remains with under construction status (ride at own risk).

On other hand, there are more than 14 miles of shared use trails in the park with much of them natural dirt surface. Much to explore if you've not been there. Gradual improvements are being made to park on a weekly basis, so trails are getting some TLC.

You can get driving directions and more info about the park (including map of the park) here -- http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_255.php Note that on the park brochure page 3 is trail map, and "21N" is North Caddy Whomper Way... "This section is the backbone of the park’s mountain bike trail system. It is a moderate thoroughfare reserved for biking, only." The intermediate level single track trails surf the contours and dive off towards interesting terrain but more or less stay close to that existing Caddy Whomper Way "thoroughfare". (note that continued trail building is happening including a south section of trail which will eventually connect with North to make an even larger mountain biking trail loop with multiple options).

stub condtions

I rode there yesterday non time. very humid day up there. Ya im liking the trails and i seen all the new connections that are being cut in or to be cut in on N caddy womper. The one thing that needs to be updated there is the signs to lead you to the trail. There was just one at the begining telling you how far but no others after that. the other 2 signs I ran into gave directions to other areas but not to caddy womper. Lucky I knew were I was going but to a new person there, they could get lost. Other than that ,the trails are doing good even though i think a little more tweeking to get the flow better on some sections. Will help if more people ride out there and get the trail more dailed in (compacted). I would like to suggest for future trails about incorparating some of the old cat roads i seen along the trail. Could increase trail length and maybe provide alternate paths. Also saw where a small short downhill section could be added to just off of the hare canyon trail (would be as heading back to hiiltop parking area, on the left side [creek side] on the last downhill headn back).

Stub mtb area is OPEN

It's OPEN!

Parks has placed signage and kiosk.

"Stub Mountain Bike Area" is now officially open to public. Initially the north loop with option for beginner and intermediate XC users. About 2 miles of mtb specific single track. Park has over 14 miles of shared-use. Much of it natural dirt surface. Trail construction continues.

Other amenities include several campgrounds with tent camping area and a hike-in only dispersed camping area. There's an 18-hole disc golf course under construction as well.

South section of mtb area remains under construction and will add additional 4 miles of XC trail. This will be focus of NWTA volunteers for 2010/2011 build season starting in October (with kickoff being the IMBA Trail Care Crew builders school).

Congrats Joe!  Thanks for

Congrats Joe!  Thanks for all of your hard work on this.

Thanks man.   Opportunity

Thanks man.   Opportunity to build in a dedicated zone of the park for mountain biking specific trails wouldn't even be a reality unless it was for the NW Trail Alliance resources involved with the early design work.   That all went down when NWTA was known as PUMP still.

So much more can happen when people step up and help instead of leaving it on the shoulders of only a few.

My hat is off to all of you!

Thanks to all who have come to help, and who will come to help... we're not even close to done yet.

  I like how the new

I like how the new mountain bike trail network opened is simply going to be called "Stub Mountain Bike Area".   Simple.

Much easier to remember than, uh, Stewhart Stub, uh, "LL" Stub... um, Stub Steward... well... "that one new state park west of Portland with the mountain biking area"...

Note: It's L.L. "Stub" Stewart State Park - that's where the trails are located.  The trails themselves are part of larger network of trails in Stub...  and connected to Banks-Vernonia Trail.

Turning into quite the network of trails.  If I was into 'cross I'd be SUPER stoked since there's a whole variety of trails and paths... easily get in 40 miles of riding in and around Stub as a hub.
