2009 Progress Overview Map of Mountain Bike Trail Building at Stub Stewart State Park

The following progress overview map will be updated each month after
build days occur - and it represents only a fraction of the single-track trails in
vision - this just shows one of the main trails which will (more or less) follow along the edge of the canyon (lots of optional offshoots are being considered - as terrain is being scounted and inventoried on the ground).  Come to an L.L. Stub Stewart State Park volunteer dig day,
build some trail, then see your work represented here as we bust out
fresh new single-track to ride!  Photos from work days will be posted in gallery . Goal: By
June 2009, complete 1.5 miles of out-and-back trail (with a small loop
at end which follows maintenance access corridor - not shown on map).

There have only been 2 build days at Stub which were "dig days", and the green
highlighted trail below shows what was built during that time.

Important!
Westside Trail Federation proposed technical challenge trails and skill area (in "Freeride" zone) are not shown.
Still in planning stages on that aspect of the mountain biking zone.  W.T.F. vision was delivered to Oregon Parks & Recreation last year (January 2008).
Expect news later this year as OPRD works thru due diligence and administration/management questions.  Also this map is not official
Oregon Parks & Recreation project trail map, it's been made by
trail build volunteer to be shared with other volunteers to help show
what progress is being made after each dig day.

status as of 4/4

The section near 3/4 mile point has been re-aligned and pin flagged in preparation for next build day (April 18th).   The rough flagged alignment took it down terrain that would require a series of switchbacks (a less than sustainable option and one that would take about 2 full days of work to complete).   New alignment adds some additional trail distance and surfs the contour better - doesn't require switchbacks.

Park trail manager will be reviewing new pin flagged alignment on Friday.   If necessary, we'll tweek more before April 18th.  But that next section from 3/4 mile out towars the "Viewpoint Loop" will be our focus for the build day.

Contractor bidding on project to put in drainage crossings will be out with park trail manager on Friday.  That part of project is on schedule to be completed by May 31st.   It's a critical part of overall project and to enable us to get the mountain biking zone open by June 6th (our goal as volunteers).

The mountain biking zone is being designed/built by local mountain biking volunteers...  (built by riders, for riders...)  Come to a build day if you'd like to help us put some of the first "mountain bike specific" trails in place in an Oregon State Park!

progress on technical challenge trails/skill area...

"W.T.F. vision was delivered to Oregon Parks & Recreation last year (January 2008).

The other aspect of the mountain biking zone at Stub is making progress!   Don't get too excited - things are churning through land management process...  which takes time...

But last month, a milestone was reached - Oregon Parks & Recreation had a couple of legal questions for Department of Justice.   They've received response to those questions, and the State Trails Manager is reviewing with staff.  We expect a deliverable out of those dialogs in 30 - 60 days (by the June 6th Trail Days event is my hope when we could take the lid off of things).

And don't get yer heart rate up... The "Freeride" trails/skill area is very much a separate aspect of the overall mountain biking zone trail network build out.  It's not holding up progress on building out other parts of the trail system.  (We're of course designing things with the expectation that the freeride trails and skill area will be approved and built...  We have to make that leap of faith - it impacts how trail is layed out with user dispersion and traffic in mind).

status as of 4/18

Note: The mountain biking zone at Stub Stewart State Park is not yet open to the public.  It's still under construction, and there's no official scheduled open date as yet.  Frankly, it depends on if we, the volunteers, can complete what's needed for phase 1 and it's approved by park trail manager.

Only the core build volunteers showed up for the 4/18 build day.  Thanks to
Ryan McLane, Keith Schoenrock, and John Joy for their continued
dedication to building sustainable single-track mountain biking trail
in the mountain biking zone at L.L. Stub Stewart State Park - we only
added half of the trail we'd planned to have done on this build day
(but half the expected crew will do that...).

We're now lagging
behind in the amount of trail we (the mountain bike volunteers) need to have "ride ready" (not done
but mostly done) by June 6th - our goal for having 1.5 mile
single-track done for "phase 1".

There's two more build days on
the calendar (both in May).  Check event calendar on either
http://westsidetrailfederation.org or http://pumpclub.org for details.
