Join Northwest Trail Alliance for our weekly Wednesday night ride in Forest Park. We typically ride 15 to 25 Miles on the firelanes, break into groups, then meet for post ride-brews & food at Cracker Jack's pub.

All levels welcome, No one left behind.

Non-Members welcome.

Ride sign up is not required for this ride.

We encourage anyone who drives to park down the hill closer to Cracker Jack's Pub to ease parking congestion around Thurman Gate.

Wednesday FP rides?

Anybody know if the Wednesday Forest Park rides will start up again? Nothing in the calendar (yet).

would 1 trail do it?

hi all - first time here -

my inquiry is simple enough:  if the lords of Forest Park deemed fit to open 1 trail to mt. bikers (like Maple, or Hardesty, or *gasp* Wildwood)  would that be enough to satisfy the community ? I know the counter argument is that it would 'open the door' and next thing you know there would be lift operated downhill courses and a resort!

but for those of us that see that City Park as a resource that the entire public is not able to enjoy currently, would you be satisfied with just one good  trail? would you keep it multi use, still give right of way to hikers, or make it 'bikes only'

your thoughts?

cheers

Portland Parks Seek Budget Input

I suggested they cede control (and responsibility) for Forest Park to Metro...

You can provide your input online or show up in person tonight:

Wissahickon

Here is a story about Wissahickon park in Philly.  The park is very similar to Forest Park in size and terrain.  Every time I hear about the trail debate in Forest Park I think about Wissahickon.  It is a perfect example of how single track could work in Forest Park.  Miles and miles of shared single track and everyone pretty much gets along well.

Forest Park Featured on OPB Oregon Field Guide

Expect this to show the trail decommissioning work we did over the winter. Should feature NWTA members as well. Here's a description from OPB:

Forest Park: Portland’s Backyard Gem

OREGON FIELD GUIDE on October 14

Oregon Field Guide devotes a half-hour special to explore the health, history and future

of Portland’s Forest Park. Five thousand acres of forest sit five minutes from urban

downtown, protected from development but facing increasing pressure from more people

who want to use it.

Every generation seems to fight over how best to use and protect the Park. Lately,

cyclists have pushed hard for new trails in the park dedicated to mountain biking.

It was in the midst of shooting video for this production when OPB encountered

mountain bikers working on an illegal trail. Watch as the bikers claim their work on

the rogue trail actually helps the environment. Then join other cyclists who go in to

repair both the damage done to the park and to the cycling community’s reputation.

The rogue trail made as much news this year as did a rogue ditch did in 1906 when a

"Share The Park" Rally & Group Ride in Forest Park

Date:
Sat, 10/16/2010 - 9:00am - 11:00am

This event is intended as a peaceful action to voice our disappointment with the recent decision by Nick Fish and Portland Parks & Recreation to say no to increased bike access to Forest Park.  We invite all those who share our passion for riding in Forest Park to join us for a gathering and a ride.  We like to show our resolve to make Forest Park a place where cyclists don't feel excluded, but instead are treated at par with hikers, runners, nature watchers, and dog walkers. --- We ride. We care. We share.

9:00am: gathering & social at the Thurman Gate entrance to the Park (at the very end of NW Thurman St).

We will serve FREE freshly brewed coffee and pastries for cyclists and non-cyclists alike.

9:30am: start group ride.

We will break out in a couple groups who will ride out-and-back loops of various speed, length and duration.

Beginner riders and children welcome!
