Trail work

Mount St Helens - Gifford Pinchot Trail work

No trail work parties are currently scheduled for the Mount St Helens area until Helens Fest II - ( 8-10 July ), when our Saturday will be devoted to working on several projects.  The Forest Service has been working on the Lewis River Trail and I expect that trail to be in pretty darn good condition.  The Siouxon Trail has received attention this year from several of us and is also in good condition.

Because of lingering snow pack we do not yet know what condition the trails are in.  During the last two weekends of June I will be making several trips up to the mountain on exploratory rides and may do some light work on those rides as well.

Sandy Ridge Trail Care 3/12

This coming Saturday, March 12th, I'm planning to get dirty with some trail work followed by some riding at Sandy Ridge. I do not currently have a car, so if you are also going out there, and would like company and gas money, let me know! You can reach me at juliek@nw-trail.org

Thanks!

Julie

New Belgium hits the trails!

Recently, I had the honor and pleasure to spending some time with David Anderson and Amy Singmaster on the Smith Creek Trail near Mount Saint Helens.  Brian Bogan and I traveled out from Fort Collins CO early for our Portland Tour de Fat (this Saturday, August 14, in Waterfront Park) to soak up the scenery and enjoy the company of our friends from the Northwest Trail Alliance.  The NWTA will be benefiting from the Parade and will be benefiting from the Merchandise and Do-It-Yourself Booths.

I had been tentative to commit to such an adventure.  I am much more of a utilitarian bicyclist, I commute almost daily and on the other days I walk.  But getting on a mountain bike and riding singletrack with locals is a little daunting when you are not much of a mountain bike rider.  Don’t get me wrong, I love to ride-but I have been working for a brewery for over 8 years, let’s just say I’m really good at 12oz curls.  Bogan, on the other hand, can shred with the best of them-so he was psyched.

Black Rock Build Day (BRMBA)

From our friends at Black Rock Mountain Bike Association:

THIS Saturday May 1st is the last organized build
day for the 2009/2010 BRMBA Build Season, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM (or a
little longer if you choose and if the trail managers are staying).
Meet at Basic Training for sign in and instructions.

We need your help!  This build day will have a primary focus of
maintenance and some finishing up of rebuilds on a couple of structures
that needed to be replaced.

If you have tools please bring them (flat or spade shovels, rake,
hammer or such)!

If you are only planning to work the gate will be open and you can
drive up to Basic Training, if you are planning on riding afterward
please ride up and we will get you to where you can help!  Please
remember to drive slowly through the camp!

If you would like a lunch please sign up for one at Basic Training;
please bring cash as lunches are usually $5-6 dollars from A&N Home
Town Grocery.

THANKS TO TRAIL BUILDERS

I'm sure this is just another boring post to most, but I thought it seemed noteworthy.  I just rode Siouxon and noticed that Jerry D cut out a bunch of pretty difficult to cut logs, now that entire area (above the junction of the Upper Trail and the Lower Trail that heads over the bridge to Chinook) that was a complete pain to get around is perfect singletrack!  Thanks Jerry, you do an amazing job with that trail!  Thanks to all who help with trails but special props to Jerry for keeping one of SW Washington's gems in top form.  He's also reworked some tread in especially difficult creek crossings and landslide prone dips.  Great day to enjoy the riding we have in our backyards!!!

Sandy Ridge Trail Work Party (NWTA)

Sandy Ridge

We've added another Trail Work Party for the Sandy Ridge Trail System!

In addition to our Trail Work Party/Discovery Ride as part of the Portland Trail Fest on April 24th, we've added a Trail Work Party on Saturday, March 20th.  Please join us, along with our trail partners, the Salem District Bureau of Land Management and the International Mountain Biking Association, for 3 hours to help cut new trail and perform maintenance work on one of the newest trail systems in our area-- then ride the completed section of trail afterwards.

We welcome you to attend even if you haven't ever worked at a Trail Work
Party-- make this your first one if you've never been to one!
