FPC Newton Road Clearing

On Friday I met with several members of the Forest Park Conservancy trail crew for some routine maintenance on Newton Road/Trail in the North section of Forest Park.  We had a great time brushing the creek section of the route which is shown as a single dotted line on page 2 of this map.  We ran into a few Fire Department folks checking the roads/trails for emergency access.  Two Fire staff on quads attempted to use the trail that we just cleared, but turned around quickly as they could not navigate the tight single track on the bulky machines.  This trail is in great shape right now, so be sure to include it on your rides in the park.

Forest Park Conservancy Newton Road Work Party

Date:
Fri, 08/27/2010 - 9:00am - 12:00pm

Join the Forest Park Conservancy volunteer work party in Forest Park Friday, August 27th to manage and improve Forest Park's trail system.

This month the Conservancy will be working on Newton Road.

Newton Road is pretty overgrown at the moment so they are making it a priority.  Any amount of volunteers we can get working out there will be a vast improvement. We're thinking the usual 9 am - noon time slot. Parking is going to be a little tight so carpooling is encouraged.

We will be meeting here.

Firelane 5 Drainage clearing (NWTA/FPC/PP&R)

Date:
Thu, 05/13/2010 - 9:00am

Join the Forest Park Conservancy volunteer work parties in Forest Park every Thursday and every 3rd Saturday of the month to manage and improve Forest Park's trail system.

This Thursday morning NWTA and the FPC will work together on Firelane 5 on some routine trail maintenance.  We will improve some of the tread that had some heavy use over the winter by filling a few ruts and removing the berm as well as removing some of the slough that has fallen down into the trail from the high side.  Primarily we will work on the upper Firelane 5 road segment that need the drains cleared.

Jeff Hough of the Forest Park Conservancy will lead this work date.

Bring work gloves and dress according to the weather forecast.

We will be meeting at the intersection of Firelane 5 and Saltzman Road.

Please sign up below if you are planning to attend so we will have the appropriate tools.

On-going efforts to increase singletrack riding opportunities in Forest Park

Several exciting developments relating to Forest Park that you might want to know about.

White Paper on Mountain Biking Completed and Submitted

The first is that the Forest Park White Paper on Mountain Biking was recently finalized and submitted to Portland Parks.  I attached a copy of the paper below. This was a drawn out process, and one not without some controversy and differing opinions, but in the end I think it was positive.  Not only due to content, but as a process that helped further develop our relationships with Parks, the Conservancy, Audubon and others.  We often had different opinions, but almost without exception, the discussion was respectful and productive.  These people will be at the table and so we have to have working relationships with them.
