Trails Skills College
Trails Skills College to be Held on National Trails Day Weekend
OREGON – Trail enthusiasts who have always wondered about how hiking trails are built or how
to stabilize a crumbling slope are invited to the Trail Skills College June 5-7, 2009 in Cascade
Locks at the Cascade Locks Marine Park. For those concerned with the declining state of hiking
trails, it will be a chance to get outside and have fun helping to save our trails.
Sponsored by the Pacific Crest Trail Association and the Trailkeepers of Oregon, the college will
teach volunteers essential skills in trail construction, design and maintenance. Instructors
include experts and professionals in the fields of recreational construction, trail maintenance and
leadership.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn everything they ever wanted to know, from tread
and erosion control to chainsaw use and crew leadership in the field.
“This is a key opportunity for people and groups to learn how to keep their trails open, secure
and well loved,” said Jamie Chabot of the Trailkeepers of Oregon. “Anyone with an interest in
trail stewardship should attend, and anyone who attends will discover new ways to improve the
environment and appreciate the environmental marvels of the Northwest.”
According to Dana Berthold, PCTA regional Representative, "Trail work is fun, the trails need
us, and trail volunteers are fantastic people. You are practically guaranteed to have a great
experience."
The goal of the Trail Skills College is to educate the next generation of trail stewards in the
Pacific Northwest, with the ultimate aim of a healthier trail system and environment.
Classes will run all day June 5th through the 7th with hands on training at the many nearby trails
of the Columbia River Gorge. Free camping is available for all attendees and some meals will
be provided.
For those interested in attending, sign-up information can be found at
