Women’s Maintenance Clinics Part 1: Beginners Basics

I had the pleasure recently to hang out at CyclePath and attend the Women’s Clinics. Ventura Park LST lead Sarah Olsen organized this series for the ladies which started on March 10th with Beginners Basics.

We were greeted by delightful snack treats and icy beverages while friend and fellow pro rider Kirsten Holster lead us through basic maintenance: the drop test, solid brakes, drivetrain, tires, and suspension. She explained a pre ride check list and its importance. Sarah talked us through the basic supplies to carry in our packs. Then we had a great interactive discussion about what tools to carry ~ the favorites being a small torque set, a multi-allen set with chain breaker, and tire levers.

Then we broke up in groups, got hands on and changed tires; Sarah gave us a demo before we got started …

We all had the opportunity to experience the finer technique of tire levers …

and when its better to patiently work the tire back on with your bare hands.

CyclePath owner Bill Larson was one of our breakout instructors …

and manager Mitch Lomacz lead my group; here explaining the importance of rim strips  and what to look for before reassembly.

Kirsten and mechanic Rye Livingston with a member of their group…

After our hands on session, there was a drawing for great swag provided by CyclePath.   All in all it was a really fun night with an awesome group of ladies all very engaged and eager to learn.  I loved the opportunity to get hands on with new techniques in a supportive encouraging environment.   HUGE Thank you to our sponsor CyclePath for hosting this series!
