SUMMARY:CANCELED // Ride Leader Training For Group Rides on 4/12
DESCRIPTION:Due to inclement weather and snowy conditions\, we’re canceling the Ride Leader training scheduled for April 12 at Gateway Green. We will offer it again soon.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA class for those interested in learning how to lead mountain bike group rides – Gateway Green 4/12 5-7:30pm. \n\n\n\n\nregister here\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn partnership with Elaine B. Bikes\, NWTA presents Ride Leader Training for those interested in leading mountain bike group rides. \n\n\n\nLeading or helping with group rides is a fun way to find riding buddies and share enthusiasm for mountain biking by introducing ways to enjoy a ride more comfortably\, safely\, and confidently. Leading rides also helps grow the sport and increase trail stewardship by involving and inviting riders at any level\, especially beginners to the sport or trail system and those new to the area. \n\n\n\nRide Leader Intro course is a basic introduction to leading rides and what tasks need to happen before\, during & after a ride\, and what to do if something goes wrong. This training is designed to increase the confidence of anyone interested in leading\, co-leading\, or sweeping (riding at the back) a ride at any level.  \n\n\n\nWhile a person does not need to have advanced or even intermediate riding skills to be a ride leader\, this is not a skills clinic. Ride leaders have a role in creating a safe and fun environment\, not an instructor role. Ride leaders are happy to share their favorite trails at whatever level they are confident on — be it a winding gravel trail to more advanced runs.  \n\n\n\nThis 2.5-hour course will also help prepare a person to succeed in the BICP’s standalone Ride Leader Certification online course. This certification is not necessary to hold group rides for NWTA. \n\n\n\nTopics covered: \n\n\n\n-Preparing for a ride\, including planning and communicating the ride\,  \n\n\n\n-Learning what goes in your backpack and what to bring along \n\n\n\n-How to assess whether a rider is at a level to enjoy the ride you’re planning \n\n\n\n-How to manage the group and what to do if something goes wrong \n\n\n\n-How to describe upcoming trail features \n\n\n\n-Practice leading and sweeping a ride \n\n\n\n-Discussing liability: what is your exposure you need insurance or permits? \n\n\n\n-Recommendations for additional education and resource \n\n\n\n-and much more! \n\n\n\nWant to know more? Read Nell Stamper’s article about the training she attended at Klootchy Creek in 2021: https://nw-trail.org/ride-leader-training. \n\n\n\nThis class is limited to 6 people. Pre-registration required. \n\n\n\nBring your helmet\, bike in good working condition\, clothing\, layers\, tools appropriate for the day\, water\, and snacks.  \n\n\n\nCurrent First aid/CPR certification or a Wilderness First Aid certification is highly recommended for ride leaders but is not required for attendance in this course. \n\n\n\nTuesday\, April 12\, 2022\, Gateway Green 5:00 – 7:30 pm\,  \n\n\n\nMeet at the picnic tables area between the pump tracks or meet at 4:30 pm at The Lumberyard to ride bikes in with Elaine. Parking is available at The Lumberyard or the SW corner of the Fred Meyer parking lot. \n\n\n\nCOVID Protocols \n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19 have a mask with you\, you cannot maintain safe social distancing. We have also had to limit the number of participants. Please make sure to pre-register. \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nHave questions? Email elaine.b@elainebbikes.com

You can shift gears\, corner\, climb and descend\, but there are a few places where they need to get off the bike to walk. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride faster; they’ll also learn slow-riding skills to have fun riding more technical trails with features up to 2” high or so on the way up and up to 4” or so high on the way down. We will also discuss riding in a group and trail etiquette\, basic bike fit information\, decision-making on the trail on whether to ride a feature or not and safe bailout techniques when things get too interesting.  \n\n\n\nBike: A mountain bike\, either a hardtail or full suspension in good working condition with platform pedals\, knobby tires\, two-hand brakes (front and rear)\, and a seat that can move up and down. Single speeds are OK but a bike with gears will be more fun on the climbs. No worn-out tires or kickstands.  \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n-A properly fitting helmet in good condition and is less than 5 years old. \n\n\n\n-Water bottle and snacks \n\n\n\n-Clothing appropriate for the weather \n\n\n\n-Tools for moving the seat up and down if necessary \n\n\n\n-Pack to carry layers\, snacks\, tools\, and water \n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n-Full-fingered gloves \n\n\n\n-Knee and elbow protection \n\n\n\n-Eye protection \n\n\n\n-Tools and supplies to change a flat tire (with assistance!) \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nNWTA follows the current state-mandated protocols. You are interested in rolling over taller features\, and possibly riding pump tracks (or rolling terrain) without pedaling the whole time. You can ride 2 miles or more on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nThis class is for: a beginning to intermediate rider who has taken a class or two but wants some skills to handle some more technical features. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will review their basic body position and spend more time riding over varying terrain including trails and rolling terrain\, as well as brake and corner with more confidence. We will split the group into Green Geckos (beginners) and Leapin’ Lizards (intermediates) as staffing allows. Each group will have at least two adult leaders and up to 8 kids per group. \n\n\n\nWe will regroup at trail intersections and as needed for snacks or layer changes. \n\n\n\nRider Experience: Beginner (Green Geckos)\, intermediate (Leapin’ Lizards) with 1-2+ years of riding on dirt trails \n\n\n\nThese riders are already comfortable riding a bike on “Green” mountain bike trails as well as dirt and grass\, and down some features up to 3-4 inches high. They can stand and coast on the pedals for short periods of time. They can shift gears and corner\, but it might not go as smoothly as it could — or at the right time. They can ride 2-4 miles on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nDuring this ride: these riders will practice their balance over varying terrain including trails and rolling terrain\, as well as brake and corner with more confidence\, shift more smoothly. SUMMARY:Suspension Clinic: Get Dialed in with Trek and SRAM - 5/13
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning how to dial in your suspension on your bike? Join Trek and SRAM at Gateway Green on May 13th and learn how to setup your suspension\, how and why to make adjustments\, and when to get your suspension serviced. \n\n\n\n\nregister here\n\n\n\n\nBring your bike\, helmet and be ready to ride. We will be taking a few laps with your suspension in different settings.  \n\n\n\nFor those who come\, please meet at the grassy area in between the pump track and bathrooms.  \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, please sign up and more importantly\, show up! (psst.. you won’t regret it!) \n\n\n\nThe Fine Print: \n\n\n\nEvents like these are made possible through NWTA membership dollars. If you are a member\, THANK YOU! If you are not\, please consider JOINING 5\,500 other mountain bikers in the greater Portland area who are making trails and events like these and so many more possible \n\n\n\nMountain biking requires riders to confront their fears\, biases\, and preconceived notions: we know what it feels like to be fearful\, uncomfortable\, and out of our element while on a ride. While we believe that everyone’s barriers should be respected\, we know that mutual support will help get us past those barriers. We must boost each other up and push ourselves to improve both on and off the bike. NWTA wants a world where everyone feels welcome\, safe\, and free in the outdoors. As an organization\, the NWTA is committed to creating a pathway to nature for everyone\, regardless of socioeconomic status\, race\, gender\, religion\, sexual orientation\, gender identity\, disability\, faith\, and country of origin.

SUMMARY:Ride Leader Training at Gateway Green - 5/31
DESCRIPTION:NWTA is hosting an Introduction to Ride Leader Training in partnership with Elaine B. Bikes. \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\nNWTA is hosting an Introduction to Ride Leader Training in partnership with Elaine B. Bikes. This training is a basic introduction to leading rides and what tasks need to happen before\, during & after a ride\, and what to do if something goes wrong. This training is designed to increase the confidence of anyone interested in leading\, co-leading\, or sweeping (riding at the back) a ride at any level.  \n\n\n\nYou will learn how to describe the trail\, pace your group and set expectations for the ride. We will discuss the difference between a skills/clinic instructor and a ride leader\, important safety considerations and even practice skills to help you monitor your riders and what to do if something unexpected happens along the way! This class is also a good introduction to leading rides for anyone interested in becoming a certified Ride Leader. (Visit https://icp.bike/ride-leader/ for more information) \n\n\n\nLeading or helping with group rides is a fun way to find riding buddies\, share enthusiasm for mountain biking\, build community and grow the sport. As a ride leader you will be introducing people to new ways to enjoy a ride more comfortably\, safely\, and confidently. You will also be increasing trail stewardship by getting riders at any level\, especially beginners into the sport or a new to them trail system and creating community for folks new to the area. This training is open to all levels of riders; beginner to advanced.  \n\n\n\nNote: This is not a skills clinic\, and skills will not be coached at this clinic \n\n\n\nThis class is limited to NWTA members (see other information on how to become a member if you are not already).  \n\n\n\nPre-registration for this training is required. \n\n\n\nTopics covered in training: \n\n\n\n\nPreparing for a ride\, including planning and the ride\, \n\n\n\nLearning what goes in your backpack and what to bring along\n\n\n\nHow to assess whether a rider is at a level to enjoy the ride you’re planning\n\n\n\nHow to manage the group and what to do if something goes wrong\n\n\n\nHow to describe upcoming trail features\n\n\n\nPractice leading and sweeping a ride\n\n\n\nDiscussing liability: what is your exposure? Do you need insurance or permits?\n\n\n\nRecommendations for additional education and resource\n\n\n\nThis training can help prepare a person to succeed in the BICP’s standalone Ride Leader Certification online course. This certification is not necessary to hold group rides for NWTA.\n\n\n\n\nQualifications & Commitments: \n\n\n\n\nRepresent and follow NWTA trail etiquette \n\n\n\nAbility to commit to leading 1-2 rides per year\, weekday evenings or weekends (sign up link)\n\n\n\nUnderstand the difference between a ride leader and an instructor. A ride leader is watching out for safety concerns and cannot teach/coach on skills\n\n\n\nUnderstand that leading a ride\, is not hosting a clinic/ teaching skills\n\n\n\nKnowledge and comfort of local trails\n\n\n\nEnjoying riding in a group setting\n\n\n\nWillingness and ability to create a safe and fun engaging environment\n\n\n\nCurrent First aid/CPR certification or a Wilderness First Aid certification is highly recommended for ride leaders (it is not required for attendance in this training)\n\n\n\n\nWhat to bring: \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n\nA properly fitting helmet in good condition \n\n\n\nWater bottle and snacks\n\n\n\nClothing appropriate for the weather\n\n\n\nTools for moving the seat up and down if necessary\n\n\n\nPack to carry layers\, snacks\, tools and water\n\n\n\nBike: For this class\, you may bring a mountain bike or hybrid in good working condition with tires suitable for dirt trails. No kickstands or street/smooth tires. Flat pedals are recommended but not required. Fenders are OK as long as they don’t make noise or interfere with the seat\, because we may move the seat up and down for some demos\n\n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n\nFull fingered gloves\n\n\n\nKnee and elbow protection\n\n\n\nEye protection\n\n\n\nTools and supplies to change a flat tire\n\n\n\n\nDate\, Time & Location: \n\n\n\nWednesday\, May 31st 2023\, Gateway Green\, 5p-8p \n\n\n\nA social to be hosted afterwards \n\n\n\nOther information: \n\n\n\nNorthwest Trail Alliance (NWTA) is a membership organization dedicated to creating\, enhancing\, and protecting mountain bike riding opportunities; advocating for trail access; promoting responsible mountain biking; and building\, maintaining\, and riding sustainable trails. Membership dollars support all of NWTA’s work\, including hosting ride leader trainings such as these. Please be ready to commit to having your rider attend each day. \n\n\n\nIn partnership with Elaine B Bikes\, NWTA is excited to offer mountain bike skills camps. Cost: $120 donation to NWTA (scholarships available email lisao@nw-trail.org) \n\n\n\nDrop off & Pick up location: Gateway Fred Meyer Parking Lot\, Corner of NE 99th & NE Pacific  \n\n\n\nEvent Location: Gateway Green  \n\n\n\nRider Experience: Beginner/Intermediate with ½ – 1 of riding on dirt trails \n\n\n\nThese classes are for kids who are already comfortable riding a bike on some “Green” mountain bike dirt trail and grass and down features up to 3-4 inches high. They can stand and coast on the pedals. They can shift gears and corner\, but it might not go as smoothly as it could — or at the right time. They are interested in rolling over taller features and riding pump tracks (or rolling terrain) without pedaling the whole time. They can ride 1-2 miles on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will continue to improve their balance over varying terrain including trails and pump tracks (or rolling terrain)\, as well as brake and corner with more confidence\, and shift more smoothly. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride faster; they’ll also learn slow-riding skills to have fun riding more technical trails including roll downs and drops 6-10” high – if they want to. The wheels may leave the ground on drops\, but we aren’t jumping quite yet. \n\n\n\nBike: The Green Gecko’s bike has platform pedals\, two hand brakes (front and rear)\, a seat that can move up and down\, and is in good working condition. Single speeds are OK but a bike with gears will be more fun on the climbs. No coaster brakes\, worn-out tires or kickstands. A Gecko’s helmet fits properly\, is in good condition\, and is less than 5 years old \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n-A properly fitting helmet in good condition and is less than 5 years old*  \n\n\n\n-Water bottle and snacks \n\n\n\n-Clothing appropriate for the weather \n\n\n\n-Pack to carry layers\, snacks\, and water \n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n– Full-fingered gloves \n\n\n\n-Knee and elbow protection \n\n\n\n-Eye protection \n\n\n\n*We have a limited amount of bikes & helmets to loan! Please confirm with rider information during registration.  \n\n\n\nParticipants should have their own water\, wear layers appropriate for the weather\, and have a backpack to take with them to the park. No items will stay at the drop-off site.  \n\n\n\nQuestions?
