SUMMARY:Gateway Green Group Session with River City Bicycles - 8/28
DESCRIPTION:Come hone those freeride skills and get some airtime with River City Bicycles and the NWTA at Gateway Green on August 28th! \n\n\n\n\nregister\n\n\n\n\nCome hone those freeride skills and get some airtime with River City Bicycles and the NWTA at Gateway Green on August 28th! This will not be a skills clinic\, but rather a low-key and playful group session to explore all that Gateway Green has to offer. \n\n\n\nThe ride is open to all genders\, and will be led by women from River City Bicycles.  \n\n\n\nAll beginner and intermediate level riders are welcome. Please sign this waiver in order to participate.  \n\n\n\nA flat-bar bike with front suspension is preferable (i.e. a hardtail or full-suspension MTB\, or a dirt jumper). An exception to this would be a BMX bike\, which would be welcomed.  \n\n\n\nMeet by the pump track at the center of the park by 5:00pm\, or if you’re running late just look for ride leaders in River City Bicycles t-shirts in the park.  \n\n\n\nQuestions can be directed to Isabella at isabellat@rivercitybicycles.com. \n\n\n\nEvents like these are made possible through a close partnership with River City Bicycles and the Northwest Trail Alliance. To support these type of opportunities\, consider becoming a NWTA Member today. \n\n\n\n*IMPORTANT* These events fill quickly and always have a waitlist of people hoping to join. It is imperative that you stand by your commitment and SHOW UP. We understand that life happens\, please notify us if you are unable to make it\, at least 24 hours before the event so we can offer your spot to someone else.

Bikes\, NWTA presents a 5 week series of beginner/intermediate MTB skills clinics. 18+\, please. \n\n\n\nTopics covered: Trail Basics\, Cornering\, Braking\, Descents and more! \n\n\n\nMeet at “The HUB” at Gateway Green (near the pump tracks & picnic tables) at 5:30 pm. \n\n\n\nClass size is limited\, and pre-registration is required. Cost: $10 donation to NWTA\, scholarships available (email elaine.b@elainebbikes.com). \n\n\n\nKNOW YOUR CAPABILITIES \n\n\n\nRider Experience: Beginner/Intermediate with at least 1-2 years of riding on dirt trails
\n\n\n\nBeginners are riders with some experience but want to be more confident and have more fun riding a bike on “Green” mountain bike trails as well as dirt\, grass\, and varied terrain. You can shift gears\, corner\, climb and descend\, but there are a few places where they need to get off the bike to walk. You are interested in rolling over taller features\, and possibly riding pump tracks (or rolling terrain) without pedaling the whole time. You can ride 2 miles or more on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nThis class is for: a beginning to intermediate rider who has taken a class or two but wants some skills to handle some more technical features. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will review their basic body position and spend more time riding over varying terrain including trails and rolling terrain\, as well as brake and corner with more confidence. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride faster; they’ll also learn slow-riding skills to have fun riding more technical trails with features up to 2” high or so on the way up and up to 4” or so high on the way down. We will also discuss riding in a group and trail etiquette\, basic bike fit information\, decision-making on the trail on whether to ride a feature or not and safe bailout techniques when things get too interesting.  \n\n\n\nBike: A mountain bike\, either a hardtail or full suspension in good working condition with platform pedals\, knobby tires\, two-hand brakes (front and rear)\, and a seat that can move up and down. Single speeds are OK but a bike with gears will be more fun on the climbs. No worn-out tires or kickstands.  \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n-A properly fitting helmet in good condition and is less than 5 years old. \n\n\n\n-Water bottle and snacks \n\n\n\n-Clothing appropriate for the weather \n\n\n\n-Tools for moving the seat up and down if necessary \n\n\n\n-Pack to carry layers\, snacks\, tools\, and water \n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n-Full-fingered gloves \n\n\n\n-Knee and elbow protection \n\n\n\n-Eye protection \n\n\n\n-Tools and supplies to change a flat tire (with assistance!) \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nNWTA follows the current state-mandated protocols. SUMMARY:Ride Leader Training for Group Rides at Rocky Point - 8/7
DESCRIPTION:A class for those interested in learning how to lead mountain bike group rides – Rocky Point Sunday 8/7 from 9 am – 11:30. \n\n\n\n\nregister\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn partnership with Elaine B. Bikes\, NWTA presents Ride Leader Training for those interested in leading mountain bike group rides. \n\n\n\nLeading or helping with group rides is a fun way to find riding buddies and share enthusiasm for mountain biking by introducing ways to enjoy a ride more comfortably\, safely\, and confidently. Leading rides also helps grow the sport and increase trail stewardship by involving and inviting riders at any level\, especially beginners to the sport or trail system and those new to the area. \n\n\n\nRide Leader Intro course is a basic introduction to leading rides and what tasks need to happen before\, during & after a ride\, and what to do if something goes wrong. This training is designed to increase the confidence of anyone interested in leading\, co-leading\, or sweeping (riding at the back) a ride at any level.  \n\n\n\nWhile a person does not need to have advanced or even intermediate riding skills to be a ride leader\, this is not a skills clinic. Ride leaders have a role in creating a safe and fun environment\, not an instructor role. Ride leaders are happy to share their favorite trails at whatever level they are confident on — be it a winding gravel trail to more advanced runs.  \n\n\n\nThis 2.5-hour course will also help prepare a person to succeed in the BICP’s standalone Ride Leader Certification online course. This certification is not necessary to hold group rides for NWTA. \n\n\n\nTopics covered: \n\n\n\n-Preparing for a ride\, including planning and the ride\,  \n\n\n\n-Learning what goes in your backpack and what to bring along \n\n\n\n-How to assess whether a rider is at a level to enjoy the ride you’re planning \n\n\n\n-How to manage the group and what to do if something goes wrong \n\n\n\n-How to describe upcoming trail features \n\n\n\n-Practice leading and sweeping a ride \n\n\n\n-Discussing liability: what is your exposure you need insurance or permits? \n\n\n\n-Recommendations for additional education and resource \n\n\n\n-and much more! \n\n\n\nWant to know more? Read Nell Stamper’s article about the training she attended at Klootchy Creek in 2021: https://nw-trail.org/ride-leader-training.communicating  \n\n\n\nThis class is limited to 6 people. Pre-registration required. \n\n\n\nBring your helmet\, bike in good working condition\, clothing\, layers\, tools appropriate for the day\, water\, and snacks.  \n\n\n\nCurrent First aid/CPR certification or a Wilderness First Aid certification is highly recommended for ride leaders but is not required for attendance in this course. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 7th\, 2022\, Rocky Point 9am – 11:30 am. \n\n\n\nNWTA membership is required to access Rocky Point. Learn more at nw-trail.org \n\n\n\nCOVID Protocols \n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19 bring a mask with you\, you cannot maintain safe social distancing. We have also had to limit the number of participants. SUMMARY:Green Geckos Mountain Bike Clinic on 4/2
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Bike Skills Class for Beginner/Intermediate 8-11-year-olds \n\n\n\n\nregister here\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nLet’s celebrate the GRAND OPENING of Metro’s Newell Creek Nature Park! \n\n\n\nBefore the festivities start NWTA is conducting a mountain bike skills clinic from 10:00 am – 11:30 am. \n\n\n\nFor Ages: 8-11 \n\n\n\nRider Experience: Beginner/intermediate with ½ – 1 of riding on dirt trails \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required  \n\n\n\nGrand Opening Details can be found HERE.  \n\n\n\nEvent Location: Newell Creek Nature Park \n\n\n\nEvent Parking: Hilltop Mall 325 Beavercreek Road\, Oregon City \n\n\n\nParking is in front of Regal Cinemas at Hilltop Mall\, across Molalla Avenue. It is about a six-minute walk to the park. The parking lot at the park will be reserved primarily for guests with mobility concerns and elderly visitors.  \n\n\n\nNo bike or helmet required! Kids can use one of our Trek Bicycles! \n\n\n\nThis class is for kids who are already comfortable riding a bike on some “Green” mountain bike dirt trail and grass and down features up to 3-4 inches high. They can stand and coast on the pedals. They can shift gears and corner\, but it might not go as smoothly as it could — or at the right time. They are interested in rolling over taller features and riding rolling terrain without pedaling the whole time. They can ride 1-2 miles on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will learn to ride in an organized manner into and out of the trails at Newell Creek Canyon. Riders will work on balancing improving shifting over varying terrain\, including trails and rolling terrain\, and corner with more confidence\, more smoothly. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride faster; they’ll also learn slow-riding skills to have fun riding more technical trails\, including drops 6-10” high – if they want to. The wheels may leave the ground on drops\, but we aren’t jumping yet. \n\n\n\nEquipment: Participants can use one of our Trek Fleet bikes (& helmet provided) \n\n\n\nParticipants should wear layers appropriate for the weather\, and clothing suitable for a bike ride. Flat shoes\, no loose clothing or straps. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Email juntu@nw-trail.org \n\n\n\nOnce registration is completed please sign NWTA/METRO Event waiver \n\n\n\nNWTA follows the current state-mandated protocols. SUMMARY:Nature for All Campaign Launch
DESCRIPTION:This November\, voters throughout our region will have the opportunity to continue protecting rivers and wetlands\, habitat and open space\, as well as to invest in parks\, by renewing the Nature for All bond. Please join us as we launch the campaign to pass this exciting and important measure on Thursday\, Sept. 19\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Cully Park in Northeast Portland. \nThe Nature for All campaign launch will center community\, diversity and families across the region with interactive activities\, healthy snacks\, and speakers representing our communities. Our mission is to gather friends\, neighbors\, community partners and other stakeholders to celebrate the efforts to create Measure 26-203 — and to look ahead to winning the campaign come November. \nThe Nature for All campaign has a critical opportunity to put community first to build lasting relationships that span beyond Election Day. We recognize that it’s not just about winning\, it’s about the impact of meaningful conversations with voters about why access to parks and green spaces contribute to the quality of life we’ve come to cherish across our region. Measure 26-203 was informed by communities of color to deliberately make key investments that ensure historically underserved areas have access to parks and conservation areas. \nPlease share this invitation widely with your family\, friends and colleagues. Together\, let’s set the stage for sustained and equitable support for our parks and natural areas in the years to come. RSVP to join us!
