You can stand and coast confidently on level pedals for entire sections of trail\, and they can shift gears and corner comfortably. You may be starting to jump and drop some features and want to learn what to do with more technical terrain and build confidence on tricky corners and berms\, and steep sections You can easily ride 2-4 miles or more on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will continue to improve their balance over varying and more technical terrain\, brake and corner even quicker\, and shift before it’s too late. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride both faster and at incredibly slow speeds with more confidence. They’ll have more fun riding technical terrain including steep sections\, tricky switchbacks\, technical climbs\, and more.  \n\n\n\nBike: A mountain bike\, preferably full suspension with platform pedals\, two-hand brakes front and back\, a seat that can move up and down\, and is in good working condition. Single speeds are OK but a bike with gears will be more fun on the climbs.  \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n-A properly fitting helmet in good condition and is less than 5 years old. \n\n\n\n-Water bottle and snacks \n\n\n\n-Clothing appropriate for the weather \n\n\n\n-Tools for moving the seat up and down if necessary \n\n\n\n-Pack to carry layers\, snacks\, tools\, and water \n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n-Full-fingered gloves \n\n\n\n-Knee and elbow protection \n\n\n\n-Eye protection \n\n\n\n-Tools and supplies to change a flat tire (with assistance!) \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nNWTA follows the current state-mandated protocols. SUMMARY:Ride Leader Training for Group Rides at Rocky Point - 8/7
DESCRIPTION:A class for those interested in learning how to lead mountain bike group rides – Rocky Point Sunday 8/7 from 9 am – 11:30. \n\n\n\n\nregister\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn partnership with Elaine B. Bikes\, NWTA presents Ride Leader Training for those interested in leading mountain bike group rides. \n\n\n\nLeading or helping with group rides is a fun way to find riding buddies and share enthusiasm for mountain biking by introducing ways to enjoy a ride more comfortably\, safely\, and confidently. Leading rides also helps grow the sport and increase trail stewardship by involving and inviting riders at any level\, especially beginners to the sport or trail system and those new to the area. \n\n\n\nRide Leader Intro course is a basic introduction to leading rides and what tasks need to happen before\, during & after a ride\, and what to do if something goes wrong. This training is designed to increase the confidence of anyone interested in leading\, co-leading\, or sweeping (riding at the back) a ride at any level.  \n\n\n\nWhile a person does not need to have advanced or even intermediate riding skills to be a ride leader\, this is not a skills clinic. Ride leaders have a role in creating a safe and fun environment\, not an instructor role. Ride leaders are happy to share their favorite trails at whatever level they are confident on — be it a winding gravel trail to more advanced runs.  \n\n\n\nThis 2.5-hour course will also help prepare a person to succeed in the BICP’s standalone Ride Leader Certification online course. This certification is not necessary to hold group rides for NWTA. \n\n\n\nTopics covered: \n\n\n\n-Preparing for a ride\, including planning and the ride\,  \n\n\n\n-Learning what goes in your backpack and what to bring along \n\n\n\n-How to assess whether a rider is at a level to enjoy the ride you’re planning \n\n\n\n-How to manage the group and what to do if something goes wrong \n\n\n\n-How to describe upcoming trail features \n\n\n\n-Practice leading and sweeping a ride \n\n\n\n-Discussing liability: what is your exposure you need insurance or permits? \n\n\n\n-Recommendations for additional education and resource \n\n\n\n-and much more! \n\n\n\nWant to know more? Read Nell Stamper’s article about the training she attended at Klootchy Creek in 2021: https://nw-trail.org/ride-leader-training.communicating  \n\n\n\nThis class is limited to 6 people. Pre-registration required. \n\n\n\nBring your helmet\, bike in good working condition\, clothing\, layers\, tools appropriate for the day\, water\, and snacks.  \n\n\n\nCurrent First aid/CPR certification or a Wilderness First Aid certification is highly recommended for ride leaders but is not required for attendance in this course. \n\n\n\nSunday\, August 7th\, 2022\, Rocky Point 9am – 11:30 am. \n\n\n\nNWTA membership is required to access Rocky Point. Learn more at nw-trail.org \n\n\n\nCOVID Protocols \n\n\n\nDue to COVID-19 bring a mask with you\, you cannot maintain safe social distancing. We have also had to limit the number of participants. Please make sure to pre-register. \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nHave questions? Email elaine.b@elainebbikes.com

SUMMARY:Green Geckos Mountain Bike Clinic at Rocky Point - 8/7
DESCRIPTION:Mountain Bike Skills Class for Beginner/Intermediate 8-11-year-olds \n\n\n\n\nregister\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nJoin NWTA & Elaine B. Bikes for a kid’s beginner mountain bike skills clinic from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. \n\n\n\nFor Ages: 8-11 \n\n\n\nRider Experience: Beginner/intermediate with ½ – 1 of riding on dirt trails \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required  \n\n\n\nCost $10 Donation to NWTA (scholarships available) \n\n\n\nEvent Location: Rocky Point Central Trailhead  \n\n\n\nThis class is for kids who are already comfortable riding a bike on some “Green” mountain bike dirt trail and grass and down features up to 3-4 inches high. They can stand and coast on the pedals. They can shift gears and corner\, but it might not go as smoothly as it could — or at the right time. They are interested in rolling over taller features and riding rolling terrain without pedaling the whole time. They can ride 1-2 miles on a trail or bike path. \n\n\n\nDuring this class: Riders will learn to ride in an organized manner into and out of the trails at Rocky Point. Riders will work on balancing and improving shifting over varying terrain\, including trails and rolling terrain\, and corner with more confidence\, and more smoothly. They’ll learn to climb\, descend and ride faster; they’ll also learn slow-riding skills to have fun riding more technical trails\, including drops 6-10” high – if they want to. The wheels may leave the ground on drops\, but we aren’t jumping yet. \n\n\n\nBike: The Green Gecko’s bike has platform pedals\, two hand brakes (front and rear)\, a seat that can move up and down\, and is in good working condition. Single speeds are OK but a bike with gears will be more fun on the climbs. No coaster brakes\, worn-out tires\, or kickstands. A Gecko’s helmet fits properly\, is in good condition\, and is less than 5 years old. \n\n\n\nRequired Gear:  \n\n\n\n-A properly fitting helmet in good condition and is less than 5 years old **We will have helmets to loan!  \n\n\n\n-Water bottle and snacks \n\n\n\n-Clothing appropriate for the weather \n\n\n\n-Tools for moving the seat up and down if necessary \n\n\n\n-Pack to carry layers\, snacks\, tools and water \n\n\n\nRecommended Gear: \n\n\n\n-Full-fingered gloves \n\n\n\n-Knee and elbow protection \n\n\n\n-Eye protection \n\n\n\n-Tools and supplies to change a flat tire (with assistance!) \n\n\n\nHave questions? Email elaine.b@elainebbikes.com. \n\n\n\nOnce registration is completed please sign: https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/60e8ab3c70a43/web/ \n\n\n\nNWTA follows the current state-mandated protocols. SUMMARY:Trail School: Benching Clinic - 2/18
DESCRIPTION:The Trail Sustainability Institute presents its first focused benching clinic at Rocky Point Trails. \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE. \n\n\n\nThe Trail Sustainability Institute (TSI) presents its first focused clinic on how to properly bench cut a trail. This clinic’s instruction centers around the proper techniques and approaches when establishing or maintaining a trail’s bench.  \n\n\n\nWhat the heck is a bench? We are glad you asked! \n\n\n\nA bench is what is left after the excavation of a hillside to create a back slope and trail tread. This can be the most substantial part of establishing a trail that winds along a hillside.  \n\n\n\nJoin TSI while we pilot this skill-specific clinic. As we look to the future\, we hope to offer more opportunities for these types of distinctive skill-building clinics. Stay tuned! \n\n\n\nOnce registered\, please sign the waiver HERE \n\n\n\nWhat to wear: \n\n\n\n– Work clothes: Light long sleeve shirt\, Long Pants (no shorts)\, Boots\, Gloves\, Eye Protection & Gloves \n\n\n\n– Jacket (be prepared) \n\n\n\n– Hard hat or bike helmet (mandatory) \n\n\n\n-Gloves \n\n\n\nWhat to Bring: \n\n\n\n– Water \n\n\n\n– Snacks \n\n\n\n– Lunch \n\n\n\nSTART time is 10am. Please have yourself and your gear ready by that time. You may find it helpful to arrive 15 minutes early. We will be meeting at the covered area.  \n\n\n\nIn accordance with our agreement with Weyerhaeuser\, the land manager of Rocky Point\, those who enter the property must be an NWTA member in good standing and have signed the Rocky Point Waiver. Join NWTA and become one of nearly 6\,000 mountain bikers stewarding trails together in NW Oregon and SW Washington. If the cost of membership creates a financial hardship\, please reach out to us\, we can help with that barrier. \n\n\n\n*COMMITMENT* We understand life happens\, if you are unable to attend\, please let us know AT LEAST 24 hours in advance. This allows other people the opportunity to attend.  \n\n\n\nPlease email nancys@nw-trail.org with any questions you may have.
