On Saturday, May 11th, NWTA, in conjunction with Washington County Parks, hosted our first trail work party at Scoggins Valley Park. Nancy Stone and Addison Wardwell led nine volunteers, divided into two groups, to the South Shore and Walnut Grove sections of the Henry Hagg Lake Trail, where trail stabilization, irrigation, and drainage improvements were made to damaged portions of the heavily-used, multi-purpose, 13.6-mile loop. Tread was raised, brake bumps were removed, rolling grade dips and knicks were created, berms were outsloped, branches were cleared, one downed tree was removed, and nearby ferns were transplanted in order to make the trail healthier, safer, and more fun to ride.
At the end of the work party, the crews re-grouped at Eagle Point to hang out, decompress, swap stories, and enjoy beverages provided by Hopworks Brewing.
The Henry Hagg Lake Trail is a great, green-to-blue, cross-country loop trail circumventing its namesake lake in Gaston, roughly 1 hour by vehicle, southwest of Portland. NWTA inked an agreement to assist with management of the trail in early 2024, and preparations are in the works for our next group work party to be held later this summer.
