NWTA Volunteers Brave the Rain for Trail Maintenance at Powell Butte

The middle of March is when it seems that Portlanders begin getting anxious to see more sun. Saturday, March 15 was not going to give us that respite, however, and it was a rainy work day out at Powell Butte!

The scope of work for the day was to re-armor some sections of trail, and the benefit of working on those trails in the rain was the ease of seeing where the water wasn’t draining well off of the trail.

Powell Butte Nature Park is a very heavily used trail system in the Portland park of the same name, with a good portion of trails loved by cyclists and hikers alike. A small team of volunteers joined Portland Parks & Recreation on the Cedar Grove and Douglas Fir Trails, where luckily it was a tad bit drier under the canopy.

After locating the trouble spots along 130 linear feet of trail, volunteers cleared the muck – or buildup of organic material that was holding the moisture on the trail – and then used roughly 3,000 pounds of gravel to armor these spots.

It was a lot of gravel by just a few people in a little time, but it was a mighty team of volunteers that were dedicated to the task!
