REI has generously donated $10,000 to relocate and reconstruct Stub Stewart’s Williams Creek Trail. This multi-user trail is located on the west side of the Banks-Vernonia Trail, along Brooke Creek. The trail parallels the creek on the flats and is a muddy mess for all users— standing water is present on the trail tread much of the year.
We’ll be working with Trail Keepers of Oregon and Oregon Equestrian Trail’s (OET’s) Northwest Chapter to reroute the trail to higher ground. We hope to break ground in June, working with a paid Trail Keepers equipment operator and volunteers from NWTA, Trail Keepers, OET, and REI.
The Williams Creek Trail project extends Stub Stewart’s existing mountain bike area, eventually linking it to the future, more southerly, Phase II mountain bike area we hope to begin in 2018. Another aspect of the project is to include all of the mountain bike trails at Stub Stewart on REI’s mountain bike trails website, MTB Project. MTB Project gives users great information, directions, and maps on where to bike.
Janet Schmidt, REI’s Outdoor Programs & Outreach Market Coordinator, is excited to continue the successful partnership between REI and NWTA. Stay tuned for trail work party call outs. We will be celebrating, with REI and our other partners, the trail’s completion late Summer or early Fall. For more information or to get involved, please contact Joe Rykowski, [email protected].
