The Work You Don’t See: Celebrating Daniel Stuart’s Impact at NWTA

Thank you, Daniel!

Daniel Stuart closes out six remarkable years of service to NWTA, defined by steady, thoughtful, and deeply impactful leadership behind the scenes.

Serving on the Executive Committee as both Secretary and then Treasurer, Daniel helped strengthen the organizational backbone that allowed NWTA to grow exponentially during his tenure. His work may not always have been visible on the trail, but it was foundational to much of what the organization has become.

Daniel led the reorganization of NWTA’s board election process, transforming what had previously been largely non-competitive appointments into a transparent public search with open nominations and online elections. That shift expanded access to membership participation and strengthened trust and accountability within the organization.

Daniel was also the primary volunteer who managed the private Rocky Point maps required by the land owner. It was a complex system that generated weekly support requests from members navigating access, but Daniel personally responded to those emails, patiently troubleshooting and ensuring members could find their way around the trail system. He also helped the Rocky Point Local Stewardship Team through the planning and execution of the trail buildout, positioning the system thoughtfully for its eventual transition to public land. His strategic mindset ensured that decisions made in the moment would support long-term sustainability.

And if there is one unofficial hallmark of Daniel’s service, it’s this: no matter the challenge, there was a spreadsheet for it. Budget projections? Spreadsheet. Election timelines? Spreadsheet. Did somebody mention RACI? Definitely a spreadsheet. Strategic planning models? Several spreadsheets. Somewhere in the NWTA archives lives an organized, color-coded record of nearly every major decision of the past six years. His love language may very well be conditional formatting, but it is without a doubt that this helped champion long-term strategic planning for NWTA.

Daniel’s service strengthened systems, built transparency, solved complex problems, and always kept the long view in mind. NWTA is stronger, more resilient, and better positioned for the future because of his six years of commitment.

Daniel, thank you for your time, your expertise, and your steady leadership. Your impact will continue to be felt for many years to come.
